by Bryan Jones

On September 23, 2014, the University of West Georgia political science department hosted a voter registration drive on the first floor of the Pafford building in conjunction with the League of Women Voters of Carrollton-Carroll County and the Murphy Center for Public Service.

UWG Political Science Department Hosts Voter Registration Drive The drive was conducted via student volunteers from the UWG Political Science Club and was a rousing success.

“Sixty-one completed voter registration forms were delivered to the Carroll County Elections and Registration office,” said Brenda McCrary, political science department assistant. “In addition, we also handed out around 60 forms that students wanted to complete and mail at a later date.”

According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., 126 million voters out of the 219 million registered voters in the country voted in the 2012 General election. Furthermore, according to the Fair Elections Legal Network, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., half of registered college age voters casted a vote in the 2012 General Election.

“Many of the incoming freshmen are recently of legal voting age but haven’t had the opportunity to register,” Brenda remarked. “Or they simply do not know where to go for registration.”

The deadline to register to vote in Georgia for the November 4 general election is October 6, and the deadline to register in Alabama is October 20.
