Five Paulding County residents attending the University of West Georgia have been awarded the Hubert G. and Naomi C. Holland Scholastic Endowment. The scholarship will cover all educational expenses for freshmen Matthew Bishop, Taylor Hainley, Katelin Kahn, Hannah Liming and Omolola Odeyemi. Provided their GPA remains above a 2.5, the scholarship will cover them for four years.

“The Holland Scholarship has allowed me many different opportunities,” says Hannah Liming, a criminology major from Dallas, Georgia. “Because it helps me pay for school, I haven’t had to pay for my books or sacrifice my extracurricular activities. It gives me additional pride in my hometown. I’m honored to be chosen, and I consider myself blessed to have grown up in such a wonderful community.”

The Holland scholarship was created in 2012, after a $271,000 donation from the estate of attorney Hubert Holland. Mr. Holland, a UWG alumnus, served the U.S. in the Korean War and then served his local community as a lawyer for more than 50 years. Now, his legacy is helping other residents of Paulding County, such as early childhood education major Taylor Hainley, who hopes to become a first grade teacher.

“I think being named a Holland Scholar is an honor,” Taylor says. “It shows me that hard work pays off, and that people other than me believe in my dreams.”

The other students were equally grateful. “It is such a great honor to be named a Holland Scholar,” says Katelin Kahn, a freshman from Dallas, Georgia. “It gives me so much pride and opportunity both for my current college experience and for my future education.”
