by Taylor Bryant and Rachel Williams

The University of West Georgia’s Homecoming 2013 will be in full effect on Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5. In its 107th year, the University of West Georgia has served as a staple in the community with homecoming celebrations that promise to be fun filled and entertaining.

UWG Homecoming 2013: “Get A Clue, Go West” This year’s homecoming, themed “Get A Clue. Go West,” includes an action packed schedule with events for alumni, students, faculty, staff and the Carrollton community to enjoy while showing their support for UWG.

Friday’s activities will kick off with UWG alumni from the ‘30s and ‘40s as they gather to fellowship and reminisce at a traditional reunion luncheon at the Food Services Building (Z6). Early registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by group photos at 11:30 a.m. The lunch program will begin at noon. The cost is $15 per person.

Friday night features the 3rd Annual Wolves Capture the Square, the university’s largest gear-up celebration for Homecoming Day. This event starts off with a 7 p.m. pep rally at The AMP, followed by the featured musical act Velcro Pygmies, a crowd-pleasing rock-n-roll band.

On Saturday, the festivities begin at 9 a.m. with the President’s Breakfast and the annual Alumni Association meeting. Campus walking tours, starting in the Technology-Enhanced Learning Center will run from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

At 10 a.m., the highlight of Homecoming weekend, the annual parade, will make its way down Maple Street and West Georgia Drive. UWG Legacy students and their families may join the Admissions office for a tailgate at the Athletic Complex between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., while the rest of the alumni can join the fun at 11:30 a.m. The class of 1963 will have their 50-year “Golden Reunion Brunch” at 11 a.m. in the Alumni House.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the UWG Wolves will take on the Point University Skyhawks from East Point, Ga. at University Stadium. Game tickets and parking information can be found at uwgsports.com.

Post game fun continues at 7 p.m., when alumni and students can choose between attending the marching band reunion at the Alumni House or the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Greek Life Step Show in the Coliseum.

This year the annual homecoming Run for UWG has been postponed to Spring of 2014 to increase its profile by making it an anchor event that will improve the opportunity for increased support through more event sponsors, and raise more dollars to support student scholarships.

UWG alumni, students and supporters are also encouraged to visit the newly digitized yearbooks, made available online by Ingram Library. The site also includes student handbooks, including publications from the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School, as well as two memoirs. The publications can be viewed online in entirety at http://archive.org/details/universityofwestgeorgia.
