West Georgia says Cheers to the World

by Sahil Gadhavi

The fifth of February at the University of West Georgia was a night to remember as around 500 locals and university students and staff, including UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero, gathered in the Campus Center to celebrate diversity at the college with the 32nd annual International Night. This event has become synonymous with the campus culture and has brought the community and the university closer every year.

Attendees were served food from several different countries made by the international students who attend UWG. Local international cuisine restaurants did not miss the opportunity to show off their culinary skills either.

The real treat, however, was the fashion show and the entertainment event that followed the food. With countries such as Jamaica, India, Sri Lanka, England, China, and Nigeria, among others, showing their traditional wear on the ramp, the night was a rather glamorous event.

Peter John, the current president of the International Student Club could be seen running around, making sure that everything went smoothly.

“Everything went as planned,” he said after the event. “ I was really happy with the huge turnout and the performances. I learned a lot from this whole event.”

Tianyi Li, a Chinese international student, took the stage to perform stand-up comedy for the very first time. Getting laughs is always a tough affair, but she seemed completely at ease in the spotlight.

“It was a terrific experience to do stand-up in front of such an awesome looking crowd,” she shared.

Dances from Nepal and Chile mesmerized the audience and gave everyone a chance to experience their culture even more. The night had everything just right--the mood, the energy, the entertainment, and some delicious food from around the world. Apparently the Sri Lankan food was a “hot” favorite.

If you missed it, don’t worry. The International Night is an annual event.
