Ceremony Honors Minority Students’ Success

On March 21, the University of West Georgia’s Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) will host its 32nd academic awards ceremony honoring the scholastic excellence of minority students at UWG. The event will take place in the Campus Center Ballroom at 7 p.m. Ashley Lewis, associate director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, is coordinating the event.

Ceremony Honors Minority Students’ Success“This is my eighth year coordinating the MAP Awards,” said Ashley. “I love having the opportunity to recognize our students for their hard work.”

Students will be presented with the following academic recognitions: the Academic Achievement Award, given to individuals who have achieved a GPA of 3.25 or higher; the Academic Excellence Award, for those who have earned a GPA of 3.75 or higher; and the A.C.E. Award, given to juniors and seniors with the highest grade point average in their field of study.

Also on that evening, an international student-athlete will be recognized as the recipient of the Helena Harbridge International Student-Athlete Award. The Helena Harbridge Award was established in 2007 to honor a former UWG golfer who died suddenly in her freshman year in April 2006. This award is given to a student-athlete who exhibits both excellent athletic performance and academic success.

Minority juniors and seniors from local high schools will also be honored at the event. These students have been identified by their guidance counselors as having the highest GPA at their respective secondary institutions.

“Recognizing local high school students strengthens UWG’s bond with its surrounding communities,” said Devin Carr, graduate assistant for MAP. “It also establishes relationships with extremely talented students who we would definitely like to join the Wolf Pack one day.”

Every year since its inception, the Multicultural Achievement Program Awards Ceremony has featured successful minority alumni as keynote speakers. In keeping with tradition, UWG graduate Julius C. White ’05 will give the keynote address at this year’s ceremony. Julius earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems and has over eight years of IT operations management experience.
