Memorial Service Honors Lives Lost

by Elizabeth Stone

Memorial Service Honors Lives Lost UWG faculty, staff, family and friends gathered on Monday, May 5, 2014, to honor those who passed away over the last year. Guests gathered in the Victory Garden of the UWG Alumni House as the sweet sounds of Amazing Grace and Deep River, performed by flautist Cortney Jackson, filled the spring air.

Dr. Kyle Marrero, UWG president, welcomed the guests and offered reflections of the deceased. “This is certainly a solemn occasion,” he says. “The University of West Georgia considers itself to be a family, a wonderful connection among faculty, staff and students.

“When we lose a member of our family, we want to pause and celebrate that life.”

Dr. Marrero and Dr. Scot Lingrell, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, also presented family members of the deceased with certificates for commemorative bricks, to be installed in the walkway surrounding the Victory Garden, and invited them to share memories of their loved ones.
