UWG Joins Relay for Life to Fight Cancer

by Sheryl Marlar

Once again this year, UWG is joining the fight against cancer by participating in Relay for Life. Team Wolfie, UWG’s own faculty and staff team, has already been hard at work planning events to raise funds for the fight against cancer

UWG Joins Relay for Life to Fight Cancer Earlier this month, American Pie provided coupons, which, when turned in by restaurant goers, American Pie donated 15 percent of the receipt totals to Relay for Life. Team Wolfie has also provided an informational table near the University Community Center twice a week during March. Members have been present to answer questions and offer information on joining the fight against cancer.

Another fun event leading up to Relay for Life is the dress-down day event. For just one dollar per day, participants can receive a sticker, which will allow them to dress down on March 26, April 3, 8 and 17. For a $15 donation, participants received a Relay for Life Luau T-shirt to wear on dress-down days.

All of these events will culminate with two main events – UWG’s own Relay in the HPE Gym on April 4 at 6 p.m., and the Carroll County Relay on May 9 in Carrollton High School’s Grisham Stadium at 7 p.m. Both events will kick off with opening ceremonies including a “Survivor’s Lap” to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer and to inspire hope for those who are currently fighting cancer. Later in the evening, Luminaria Ceremonies will be held. This will be a time to remember those who lost their battle with cancer, to support those who currently fight cancer and to honor those who have fought cancer in the past.

Both ceremonies will continue throughout the night and will include activities and entertainment, ending with a closing ceremony early the following morning. The closing ceremony will allow participants to celebrate their commitment to the fight against cancer.
