2013-2014 Ingram Scholars Selected

by Joy Esiemokhai

Each fall, the sophomore, junior and seniors with at least 29 hours at the University of West Georgia and an overall GPA of 3.75 and above are chosen to be Ingram Scholars. The Ingram Scholarship is one of the most prestigious academic distinctions for students at UWG. The scholarship is named after Dr. Irvine S. Ingram, the first president of UWG who led the university from 1920 to 1969.

For the 2013-2014 academic year, 341 students were nominated for the Ingram Scholarship. Of these, 114 were sophomores, 89 were juniors and 138 were seniors. These students come from all over Georgia, the United States and the world, and represent the highest academic performers in UWG. With their nomination, each Ingram Scholar will receive a certificate and a congratulatory letter from the UWG Interim Provost, Dr. Donadrian Rice.

The Ingram Scholars started as the Presidential Scholars in 1972. The name was later changed to honor the legacy of Dr. Ingram. “These are our very best students and it has been an honor and privilege for me to have been associated with this group for over 40 years,” said Dr. Benjamin de Mayo, professor emeritus of the UWG physics department and academic coordinator of the Ingram Scholars.
