On-Campus This Week With UWG Athletics

by Matt Cooke

The remainder of this final week of classes on campus at the University of West Georgia will be full of events with UWG Athletics, beginning on Thursday, April 16, with a special recognition of the accomplishments of the men’s and women’s basketball teams at The Coliseum.

On-Campus This Week With UWG AthleticsThe 2014-15 athletic year has been one of outstanding accomplishment for the UWG Athletic Department, and the basketball program has had its share of success this year. The men’s basketball team won a share of the Gulf South Conference Regular Season championship and reached the semifinals of the NCAA South Regional, culminating in a 22-9 record, tied for the best under Head Coach Michael Cooney.

On the women’s basketball side, 2014-15 saw head coach Scott Groninger have his best year to date at UWG, as the Wolves finished with 19 wins. On Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the UWG Athletic Department will hold a special ceremony at The Coliseum to honor these accomplishments and to present the banner to the men’s team for their championship and entry into the NCAA tournament.

Saturday, April 18, will be a day full of action for UWG fans, as UWG Athletics will host the first Tickets and Biscuits event from 9 a.m.-noon at the Athletic Operations Building adjacent to University Stadium. Fans will have an opportunity to renew their contribution to the UWG Athletic Foundation and to select and purchase their season tickets for the upcoming 2015 UWG Football season.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, the UWG softball program will begin their final home Gulf South Conference series of the year, taking on the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers at University Field. It will kick off a three-game series, finishing off on Sunday on Senior Day, when UWG Softball will honor six seniors on the occasion of their final games at University Field.

Also on the diamond on Saturday will be the UWG Baseball squad, a team that is within striking distance of the lead in the Gulf South Conference standings. The Wolves will look to get to the top of that heap on Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series against Christian Brothers. First pitch on both days is set for 2 p.m.

Weather could be a factor for both baseball and softball this weekend, and the schedule could change with the onset of more rain, so stay in touch with UWG Athletics at uwgsports.com or follow @UWGAthletics on Twitter. For Facebook fans, follow us at www.facebook.com/WestGeorgiaWolves.
