Basketball Around the Holidays

by Matt Cooke

There are two things that go hand-in-hand for someone like me. First is University of West Georgia basketball and second is the holiday season.

You might think that sounds a little crazy, but for someone who has been a part of this university for the last 12 holiday seasons, it is hard to think of one without thinking of the other. From late November until the first of the year, my holiday season is a hectic mix of UWG basketball, holiday gatherings and the holidays themselves.

Basketball Around the HolidaysAnd sure, I love the basketball that is played at that time of year. I can remember beating Kennesaw State and Christian Brothers on buzzer-beaters at this time of year. Da’Ron Sims hit a game-winning shot against Arkansas Tech when they were among the top teams in the nation.

But as much as I love basketball, I love how our community comes together at these games with things like the Holiday Canned Food Drive and the Holiday Toy Drive that UWG Athletics uses at each of the games in the months of November and December.

Just last week, after one game with the canned food drive, we already had a large trash can that was nearly halfway full with canned goods to help stock local food shelters through the busy holiday season. And I have no doubt that the generosity of the UWG fan base will extend into December with the Holiday Toy Drive to benefit families in need in the area.

And the Wolves have taken a step up on the court as well, both in record and in the competition that will be coming to The Coliseum.

Through the first four games of the year, the men’s team is undefeated and the women’s team has had a pair of hard-fought losses to solid Division II opponents. But the conference season is almost upon us, and unlike in past years, it begins over the holiday season.

First comes an always tough opponent in the North Alabama Lions on Wednesday, December 18, followed by the Union Bulldogs on Friday, December 20. Gulf South Conference games are always a challenge, and it always helps to have a raucous crowd on those occasions.

So take a break from the holiday gatherings and parties, come on down, bring the kids and have a great time at The Coliseum this holiday season. Bring a toy or some canned goods to help your neighbors in the Carrollton area and let’s cheer on the Wolves to victory!
