Students Offer Tutoring to Local Elementary SchoolsThe University of West Georgia College of Education is working to ensure that local elementary school students will have the math skills necessary to succeed. The College of Education Math Clinic offers help to students from ages 5-12 every Tuesday and Thursday. The clinic is open year-round from 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. in the Education Center Annex.

Two tutors are assigned to each student, providing individualized support and encouragement to those struggling with mathematical concepts and skills. Senior students majoring in early childhood education provide the tutoring service. This program is not only beneficial to the elementary student but to the tutors as well. It gives them a chance to employ the skills they have learned in the classroom and an opportunity to begin helping children. Read more ...

College of Education Hosts Learning Festival 2013The University of West Georgia’s College of Education hosted the 7th annual Learning Festival in May 2013.

This year’s event was a conference-style program that highlighted current trends and practices in education while featuring interactive sessions. In one of the sessions, Ashley Wilkes, a fifth grade teacher at Brooks Elementary in Coweta County, discussed how to use choice boards in order to have differentiated instruction and success with student choice. She explained how choice boards allow for various specific skills to be targeted through planned activities. Students may perform the task independently, in a small group or even with the instructor. College of Education Hosts Hiring Simulation FairThe College of Education’s Department of Leadership and Instruction hosted the third annual Hiring Simulation Fair last spring. The Hiring Simulation Fair gives UWG’s graduating education students the chance to practice interviewing with school administrators.

The school administrators are all working professionals who are also enrolled as graduate students in UWG’s Educational Leadership Program. Educational Leadership faculty served to oversee the event. Participation in the Hiring Simulation Fair is a course requirement for students who wish to graduate from the Secondary Education or Health and Physical Education programs. Read more ...


Student Named Quarterfinalist for Grammy's Music Educator Award

Student Named Quarterfinalist for Grammy's Music Educator AwardUniversity of West Georgia graduate student, Johnny Holloway, is a quarterfinalist for the U.S. 2013 Grammy's Music Educator Award. The award is presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation.

Johnny is a graduate student at UWG where he is studying to receive his Master’s in Music Education degree and is also currently a chorus teacher at Evans Middle School in Newnan, Georgia.He is one of 217 music teachers from 195 cities across 45 states that have been announced as quarterfinalists for the award. More than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. Read more ...
