UWG to Host International Mathematics Conference

by Taylor Bryant

University of West Georgia’s Department of Mathematics will host “Integers 2013: The Erdos Centennial Conference in Combinatorial Number Theory,” a four-day conference focusing on the mathematical areas of combinatorics and number theory. The conference will be held Thursday through Sunday, October 24-27, in UWG’s Education Center.

UWG to Host International Mathematics Conference The conference has been held biennially at the University of West Georgia since 2003. This year’s event is being held in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Paul Erdős, one of the most celebrated mathematicians of the twentieth century. According to UWG’s Dr. Bruce Landman, “Erdős is often considered the father of combinatorial number theory.”

The conference is intended for students as well as mathematicians, and is expected to attract participants from fifteen different countries. It will feature five plenary speakers, most of who have collaborated with Erdős. There will be over fifty additional speakers representing a wide range of career stages, from students conducting their own research to distinguished scholars in the field.

“Combinatorial number theory is a very accessible branch of mathematics, where many of the research problems are understandable even to high school students,” says Dr. Landman, chair of the department of mathematics and organizer of this year’s Integers Conference.

Also organizing the conference are Ronald Graham of the University of California at San Diego, Florian Luca of National Autonomous University of Mexico, Melvyn Nathanson of the City University of New York, Jaroslav Nesetril of Charles University (Prague), Richard Nowakowski of Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia) and Carl Pomerance of Dartmouth College. The organizers are also members of the editorial board of the journal Integers. UWG is considered home for Integers because Dr. Landman is the managing editor. The proceedings of the Integers Conference 2013 will be published as a special issue of the journal.
