Department of Psychology Hosts Humanistic Conference

by Briana Crawford

The University of West Georgia’s Department of Psychology hosted the Humanistic Psychology at Work: Transformational Leadership Conference on April 5, 2014. The event took place in the Education Building on campus.

“The purpose of the conference is to reach out to the community to share the department of psychology’s content and culture,” says Victoria Yang, office manager and graduate coordinator for the psychology department. Stress management, conflict resolution and navigating cultural and sexual diversity are but few of the lectures and workshops in which attendees were able to participate.

Speakers included professors from UWG and other healthcare professionals. Different rooms throughout the Education Building hosted different speakers and topics. The first half of the day included sessions from 9:45 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. followed by a lunch break. The latter half of the sessions resumed at 1:15 p.m.

The sessions provided a collection of knowledge and ideas to consider for a healthy mind, body and spirit. Patrick Whitehead, Ph.D. student and instructor in the department of psychology, led a session titled "Coaching the Entire Athlete: Holism in the Sport of Running," which detailed using the mind as a powerful tool to concentrate on intensity as it pertains to running and everyday life. This lecture gave instruction to those interested in designing a detailed holistic running program.

Dr. Kathleen Skott-Myhre, former psychotherapist with a passion for women issues, presented “Navigating Roadblocks between Women and Men in the Workplace.” Dr. Skott-Myhre, assistant professor of psychology, invited women and men to create positive and productive work environments that promote fair and impartial treatment of both sexes.

Community leaders of all sectors were asked participate. Leaders and guests were able to experience the opportunity to engage in informative, interactive as well as enjoyable personal growth activities.
