UWG Students and Alum Honored by National Broadcasting Society

by Rachel Williams

The University of West Georgia will be represented by six mass communications students as finalists in the National Broadcasting Society Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition. The competition will be held during the NBS national convention in Hollywood, California. Alan Duke, a CNN reporter who graduated from UWG in 1984 with a degree in political science, will be a keynote speaker at the convention.

"I could not be more proud of all of the students who entered the NBS Electronic Media competition,” says Dr. Brad Yates, UWG mass communications professor and faculty adviser for NBS. “I am so thrilled that we had so many selected as finalists. To be chosen as a finalist is a testament to the students' talent and hard work. I extend heartfelt congratulations to each one of them. Moreover, to know that West Georgia alum Alan Duke of CNN will be at the convention as part of one of the panels is a treat, too. UWG will be well represented in Hollywood!" Dr. Yates is also on the NBS Alpha Epsilon Rho board of governors and has been helping plan the convention for many months.

The six students are responsible for four entries in three different categories. Kelsey Matthews and Michael Tucker each submitted an entry to the Audio Commercials category: “Money Micro-Managing Wallet Commercial” and “Yuengling Commercial,” respectively. Lacey Hill submitted an academic paper, “Exploring Defamation in Modern Media” to the Student Academic Paper category. Chad Brock, Aaron Heidman and Annie Kim submitted “The Things I’ve Seen” to the Music Video category. The winner will be announced Saturday, March 15, 2014.
