UWG to Host First State of Community Event

by Bonnie Butcher

On Thursday, February 25, University of West Georgia College of Social Sciences will host the State of Community: Carroll. The presentation will include current findings affecting the state of the Carroll County community, including trends in voting, crime, public health, and demographics. The workshops will focus on leadership, data-driven decision-making, and writing grants.

UWG to Host First State of Community Event “College of Social Sciences students, staff, and faculty are community engaged, civically active, and change-makers in their communities,” said Dr. Amber Smallwood, associate dean of the College of Social Sciences.

COSS curriculum emphasizes community engagement practices including service learning and community-based research. This provides those in the program to regularly work together with several hundred community partners throughout the region. The collaboration provides a better understanding of the contemporary social issues affecting our communities.

“Building a base of high-interest community topics and delivering relevant and important information on these is an exciting aspect of State of Community,” said Dr. Smallwood. “We see this as a mutually beneficial gift between our college and our community. In addition to the findings and trends we will present at State of Community, we look forward to hearing from attendees about other issues they want to see presented at next year's event.”

This event was created through conversations between Dr. N. Jane McCandless, dean of the College of Social Sciences, Dr. Smallwood, Kim Jones, executive director of the Community Foundation of West Georgia, and Dr. Melanie McClellan, executive director of community engagement at UWG.

A breakfast and presentation will be from 8:00-9:30 a.m. followed by workshops from 9:45-11:45 a.m. The event will be held in the Campus Center Ballroom. Registration for the event can be completed online, via phone, or face-to-face. Register at www.westga.edu/coss/community.
