West Georgia Technical College and the University of West Georgia’s Department of Criminology recently acted on a call for more cooperation between the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia. On Thursday, October 10, 2013, UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero and WGTC President Dr. Skip Sullivan signed a transfer articulation agreement. This agreement allows both institutions to provide educational opportunities for currently enrolled and potential students. The agreement was also signed by Mr. Pat Hannon, WGTC vice president for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Donadrian Rice, UWG interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

Jane McCandles, UWG's Dean of College of Social Sciences; Dr. David Jenks, UWG's Chair of Criminology; Dr. Donadrian Rice, UWG's Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Kyle Marrero, UWG' s President; Dr. Skip Sullivan, WGTC's President; Pat Hannon, WGTC's Vice President of Academic Affairs; Robert Curry, WGTC's Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Sindi McGowan, WGTC's Assistant Vice President for Curriculum

“Today’s agreement creates a seamless transition for criminal justice students at West Georgia Technical College into the award-winning criminology program at the University of West Georgia,” says Dr. N. Jane McCandless, dean of the UWG College of Social Sciences. “Labor statistics show above average growth trends for many careers in criminology, and we are excited to lead the university in this partnership that will benefit our local community and the region.”

“This is a significant step in technical education that will provide more options for students,” says Dr. Sullivan. “This will allow more opportunities for students to build on the skills they learn here at West Georgia Technical College.”

According to the agreement, any WGTC student who completes the Associate of Science degree in criminal justice will be able to transfer to UWG. Eligible students must be in good standing at WGTC and meet the appropriate admissions requirements to attend UWG. Once admitted, up to 60 hours of pre-determined courses earned at WGTC with a grade of C or above will automatically transfer toward UWG’s bachelor’s degree in criminology. According to Dr. David Jenks, chair of UWG’s Department of Criminology, this is a huge step. “The Department of Criminology at UWG is committed to reaching beyond campus borders to serve the needs of our community,” he says. “We are very proud to be on the forefront on this initiative.”

“We would like to thank our colleagues at UWG. It was truly a pleasure to see this agreement come to fruition,” says Hannon. “We look forward to future articulation opportunities that will benefit the students and communities that both of our institutions serve.”

At least one administrative or faculty member will be appointed from each institution to act as a primary point of contact and agent for this agreement. This person will speak for their institution and communicate details and modifications to respective faculty, advisors and others with interest at the individual institutions.

"This articulation agreement exemplifies partnerships that further educational and economic development for our community,” says Dr. Marrero. “We will continue to explore future articulation agreements that create new opportunities. Skip and I are unified in this endeavor."
