The Sky's the Limit

by Damian Jennette

Originally from Fayetteville, Georgia, I moved to Newnan after being released from active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August 2003. I was aware of UWG Newnan and knew of its reputation, but the summer of 2008 fast tracked my decision to pursue my MBA.

The Sky's the LimitI have been a licensed pilot for more than two-thirds of my life, flying commercially for over 14 years of my 37-year life span. I started flying at the age 0f 14, soloing my first airplane at the age of 16, and becoming licensed at the age of 17. I served as a flight instructor, charter pilot, captain with Atlantic Southeast Airlines, AirTran Airways, and then Southwest Airlines. I have a love of flying but 2008 opened my eyes to the volatility of my industry. The financial meltdown forced many airlines to downsize and/or file bankruptcy. I quickly determined that I needed a back-up plan, especially with a newborn. My love of finance and financial planning turned from a dream into a vivid reality. I knew that I needed an advanced graduate degree to give me a competitive edge. After “shopping around,” I determined the most economical and successful route was through an MBA with the University of West Georgia. In addition to my flying career, I started out as a stockbroker building up my book of business in the summer of 2009 after passing my Series 7 and 63 exams. This was my stepping stone that would allow me to open up my own registered investment advisory (RIA) firm.

After obtaining my MBA, I successfully opened my own RIA practice in 2014. I now operate in a rich market of millennials and retirees, both markets expanding every month. In addition to my practice and flying career, I also serve as an arbitrator with the securities industry through FINRA. Who knows what the next adventure might be?

I consider my education through UWG a major component of my success. I am grateful to the dedicated faculty and staff that were my strongest educational advocates throughout my journey.
