A Passion for Nursing

by Maggie Mappin

Throughout my life, I have always seen myself as a caring and compassionate individual. I have always concerned myself with the well-being of others and tried to make positive impacts on those around me in any way possible. Whether I was assisting with medical needs of my family or simply showing support to a friend, I was always someone that could be counted on.

When my grandmother became ill, she was moved to a nursing home and rehabilitation center so that she could be cared for more closely. I spent much of my time, when I was not in class, staying with my grandmother and assisting in her care when I could. I helped to feed her, comb her hair, listen to her stories and other seemingly simple task that would show her that I cared. Through this experience, I was able to observe the nursing staff that cared for my grandmother. I witnessed some negative interactions with some of the staff; however, for the most part I was completely touched by the tender, passionate care that the nurses exhibited. My appreciation for the nurses’ actions furthered my desire to attend college in order to become a nurse.

When it came time to apply for college, it was only natural that I wanted to attend nursing school. Because nursing programs have become extremely competitive, I applied to many programs that I was not admitted to and had to retake courses to earn better grades. Through perseverance and my dedication to become a nurse, I was able to take great strides towards my dream of becoming a nurse and was finally admitted to the School of Nursing at the University of West Georgia where I have a 3.81 program GPA. I feel as though these characteristics will assist me in being a great nurse by providing safe, quality care and serving as an advocate for my patients.

The field of nursing is continually evolving and offers a vast array of opportunity. Because of this, after receiving my bachelor’s of science in nursing from UWG, I hope to continue my education. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner. I have been influenced by one of my professors, who chose a career in gerontological advanced practice nursing. Her enthusiasm for elderly patients was truly admirable. Her attitude furthered my interest with this group of patients.

In addition to becoming a nurse practitioner, I have also considered teaching nursing college courses. This would provide me with great satisfaction knowing that I could possibly have an impact on students and encourage them, just as I have been encouraged. My ultimate goal is to positively influence my patients, and possibly influence my patients, and possibly even students. If I accomplish this, I will succeed in my mission in nursing.

Maggie Mappin is senior majoring in nursing at the UWG Newnan Center.
