UWG mourns the Passing of Dr. David Hovey

Dr. David H. Hovey Jr., former dean of Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia, passed away on August 25, 2013, at the age of 71.

Dr. David H. Hovey Jr., former dean of Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia, passed away on August 25, 2013, at the age of 71.Dr. Hovey was a well- respected individual, impeccable teacher, and trustworthy friend. He was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on July 20, 1942. As a young adult, Dr. Hovey served in the U.S. Army, and in 1984 he decided to come to the University of West Georgia to pursue his dream of teaching.

From 1984-1999, he was a professor of management and business systems and also the dean of the Richards College of Business. In 1999, he retired his position as dean and became the director of the Center for New Business Ventures until 2002. Lastly, from 2002-2008, he was a full-time professor, completing his career. Dr. Hovey retired in summer 2013.

While at the UWG, Dr. Hovey established the Small Business Development Center on campus and helped create Georgia’s first MBA online program. He also initiated the International Banking and Finance Study Abroad program and the annual Economic Forecast Breakfast.

Dr. Hovey leaves behind two daughters, Ashlyn Hovey Coussan of Cumming, Georgia; Shea Mildred Hovey of Brooklyn, New York; one sister, Mary Lynne Bonin of St. Martinville, Louisiana; three grandchildren, Cody, Christian and Caleb Coussan of Cumming, Georgia; and one niece and nephew.

Visitation for Dr. Hovey was held on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Almon Funeral Home in Carrollton, Georgia and a service was held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.
