UWG Professor and Student Speak at Southern Company for Veteran’s Day

by Rachel Williams

UWG Professor and Student Speak at Southern Company for Veteran’s Day Dr. Erich Bergiel, a professor of management at the University of West Georgia, spoke at Southern Company’s “Honoring Our Veterans” program on November 11, 2013. Dr. Bergiel, who is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, teaches courses at the UWG Richards College of Business. The ceremony was held at the Georgia Power headquarters and broadcasted to the rest of Southern Company’s employees.

Dr. Bergiel spoke about common misconceptions of veterans, as well as the benefits of hiring retired members of the military. “It was really an honor to be asked to speak,” he says. “Given my experience in both business and the military, I was able bring a unique perspective. I think it shows that we're definitely moving in a new direction. The perception of veterans 30 to 40 years ago wasn't as welcoming as it is today. Now, it seems like employers are making an effort. There's a lot of experience and knowledge these vets possess that would benefit any organization.”

Dr. Bergiel’s impact as a veteran isn’t confined to his speaking engagement. “I do have a lot of veterans in my classes,” he explains. “Once people find out, it's kind of a tight knit community. A lot of people will come up and introduce themselves, which I think is great.”

One such student is Scotty Burkes, a senior who is pursuing a degree in management at UWG. Like Dr. Bergiel, Scotty is a business-minded veteran. Along with Dr. Bergiel, Scotty helped lead the “Honoring Our Veterans” ceremony. Scotty will graduate in December.
