Alum Gives Budding Reporters a Fresh Outlet

by Julie Lineback

Alum Gives Budding Reporters a Fresh Outlet Student journalists now have the opportunity to showcase their sports reporting abilities via the website Peach State College Sports. The outlet is the brainchild of University of West Georgia alum and 11Alive news anchor, Sam Crenshaw. The site was created in the fall of 2013 for Georgia college students enrolled in a four-year or junior college. It was recently expanded to include those from around the southeast.

Sam is no stranger to sports reporting. One year after graduating in from UWG in 1981 with a degree in mass communications, Sam was on the sidelines working for WLRB in Columbus when his alma mater won the NCAA Division III National Football Championship in 1982.

From there he worked as sports anchor on several television stations until he landed in his most recent job at WXIA—11Alive in 1998. He also has served as anchor for ESPN’s Black College Sports Today, sideline reporter for ESPN2’s broadcasts of various football games and host for Sportsouth’s Matchpoint Atlanta. All this has cemented him as an authority in the world of sports.

Now he aims to help give similar opportunities to the next generation of sports reporters through Peach State College Sports. Using the site, students can hone their skills and establish a name for themselves by posting weekly blogs, photos or videos.
