Marrero Discusses Past and Future with 101-Year-Old Alum

by Sheryl Marlar

Dr. Kyle Marrero chats with Albert Jones.Dr. Kyle Marrero, president of University of West Georgia, recently visited the home of Albert Jones, a 1936 graduate. At 101 years old, Albert is one of UWG’s oldest living alums and has lived his entire life in the Hulett community, in eastern Carroll County.

Albert is a loyal friend to the university. He has established scholarships and is a long-time contributor to UWG's A Day campaign.

During the visit, Albert spoke fondly of his days at West Georgia, noting that while he was here, there were only about four cars on campus. Several of his professors went on to become presidents of other universities. He also mentioned how impressed he is with how much the university has grown in his lifetime, in so many ways. It’s been approximately two years since he last visited the campus, but he said that he would like to visit again soon to see the stadium and the new nursing building.

Albert also discussed some of his favorite hobbies with Dr. Marrero, including the stock market, gardening and farming. In fact, Albert has already picked out a new spot for his garden this spring, where he can see it from his bedroom window. Albert will celebrate his 102nd birthday on Monday, February 17.
