UWG Alum Wins First Place at Film Festival

By Alexandra Taylor

University of West Georgia alum Dave Lang, of Atomic Films, won first place at the inaugural Capture Film Project on September 27 - 29. The Association for Visual Arts led this unique, community-sourced film festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

UWG Alum Wins First Place at Film Festival All project participants were given 24 hours to shoot footage, which began on Friday, September 27, and were to embrace the theme "simple beauty." The range of cameras included everything from professional grade to smartphones and the photographers were asked to submit their five best shots.

Three edit teams were paired with three different local bands that recorded brand new songs to be used as soundtracks for the film projects. Dave and Sean Geer of Atomic Films were paired with the band Summer Dregs. The bands and edit teams met on Friday and worked until the deadline on Sunday morning. The finished projects were shown at 5 p.m. at Track 29, an events venue in Chattanooga, during a fundraising event for AVA.

Jonathan Taplin, director of University of Southern California's Annenberg Innovation Lab, judged the videos and first place went to Atomic Films. Prizes were also awarded to the winners of best film, best footage and people’s choice.

Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from UWG in 1982. He got his first job working at a radio station in Chattanooga but soon after decided to start his own company, Atomic Films. Now a small firm based out of Chattanooga, Atomic Films has received national recognition with multiple Addy Awards.
