When the Smoke Clears: Focusing Events, Agenda Setting, Issue Definition, and the Politics of Gun Control

When the Smoke Clears: Focusing Events, Agenda Setting, Issue Definition, and the Politics of Gun ControlOn December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, a gunman with a history of mental illness, committed one of the worst mass murders in recent American memory. First he killed his mother at the home they shared. Then, armed with a semi-automatic firearm, Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, murdered twenty first-graders, six staff members, and then killed himself.

Mass murders at schools and colleges, as well as the assassinations of such prominent American figures as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and President John F. Kennedy, known as gun violence focusing events, have become an unfortunate part of the American experience. Read more ...

Using Native American Concepts to Help Explain the Unexplainable

Using Native American Concepts to Help Explain the UnexplainableThe University of West Georgia’s Department of Psychology held its annual Bill Roll Lecture on Thursday, October 23 in the Technology-Enhanced Learning Center. Dr. Stanley Krippner, eminent psychologist in consciousness studies, parapsychology, and transpersonal psychology, spoke on the Native American model “long body” and how Dr. Roll used this to explain parapsychological experiences and psychic phenomena.

Dr. Christopher Aanstoos, close friend of Dr. Roll and professor of psychology at UWG, opened the lecture. Dr. Aanstoos introduced the term “long body” as a parapsychological concept at a 1986 conference at then-West Georgia College. The phrase is derived from the unique Native American concept of self in that one’s identity did not lie in separate individuals, but in their relatives and community members, both living and deceased, and even sacred objects and places. Meeting the Needs of Today's Adult Learner at UWG

Meeting the Needs of Today's Adult Learner at UWGLike many in higher education, I have been listening closely to the talk about reaching out to our adult learners. In the beginning of these conversations I wondered if we were not already doing all that we could. After all, in the College of Social Sciences alone we have online programs and evening programs, and we accept transfer credits, military credits and even CLEP exams. However, over the course of these last few months I have had the opportunity to learn much more about the ways that we can, and should, reach to the adult learner.

In June I attended two conferences that focused upon the adult learner. The first conference was the statewide conference, sponsored by the Adult Learning Consortium. Read more ...
