Uncovering the Past: UWG Field School Explores the Rich Prehistory of Savannah River Swamps

Uncovering the Past: UWG Field School Explores the Rich Prehistory of Savannah River SwampsThis past June, I was fortunate enough to be one of twelve anthropology students from the University of West Georgia (UWG) to take part in an archaeological field school under the guidance of professors Dr. Ashley Smallwood and Dr. Thomas Jennings. We spent four weeks excavating one-by-one meter test units in the dense swamps of along the Savannah River. Each morning our group set out on a one-mile hike to the site, crossing creeks and often wading through knee-deep murky water, avoiding snakes and alligators along the way. Read more ...

Dream On Students, Dream On

Dream On Students, Dream OnWhen I was selected among all of the students in the Mass Communications Department in 2009 to help create The WOLF Internet Radio, I dreamt big. Can UWG’s radio station be what all other college radio stations are to their campus? Can it even live up to what the original student station was in the '70s and '80s? The answer was simply yes.

In spring 2010, 6 students in the first Radio Practicum class pushed out on-air programing, promoted the station, and launched a worldwide Internet only station. That fall it grew to 3 paid students, 8 practicum students and myself, 1 part-time casual laborer leading the helm. Chris York, Taylor Cyr, Jimmy Keane passionately created policy and procedure. We labor late nights with pizza and drank enough Monster to send most people into cardiac arrest. Read more ...

Psychology: Consciousness and Society

Two UWG Alums Present Chattahoochee River Restoration Project
Upon graduating from Emory University in 2002 with a BA in Sociology and a passion for photography, I set out to find my place in the world. After nearly ten years of continuous travel, I’d come to understand that “home” is in one’s heart and that it’s exceptionally difficult to earn a living as an artist!

Still, the urge to create and express myself in unique ways impels everything that I do. It’s for this reason that I consider the doctoral program in Consciousness and Society through the Department of Psychology at West Georgia to be one of the most exciting opportunities in academia. A Whole New Direction

Before I was accepted into college I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was going to earn my law degree, practice criminal and corporate law in the comforts of my own firm and everyone is to sign in with Cynthia at the front desk. I began my journey in the classrooms at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Its marketing slogan is “First for Women.” I was sold with the small-sized campus and its historical atmosphere. However, my days as a Pirate were numbered. I completed one semester before transferring to the University of West Georgia. Read more ...

Engaging Tomorrow Today

Engaging Tomorrow TodayWhen I listen to our students speak about their future careers I often reflect upon my own - wondering if I am in the career that I charted some thirty years ago as I walked the halls of Meadowbrook High School, a very small school, in a very small town, and in a very small part of the world.

As I reflect upon those years, I am immediately reminded that I am not able to remember all of the people and all of the events that prepared the way for me to become a Dean. However, I do remember, daily, how happy I am to be the Dean of the College of Social Sciences. Read more ...
