The University of West Georgia recognized its top donors recently. Members of the 1906 Society attended a ceremony in December, where they were presented medallions in recognition of their generous gifts.

The 1906 Society commemorates the founding year of West Georgia College, recognizing all gifts to UWG, regardless of what college, school, or program benefits from the gift. Once donors have given a cumulative total of $25,000 to UWG, they will be recognized with lifetime membership.

UWG alum Luis Planas was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He spoke of his and his wife Abrenda’s commitment to UWG and thanked those present for their commitment.

“Through your commitment and generosity, you are creating a sustainable future for UWG and our students,” he said. “Thank you for providing the opportunities that prepare the future leaders of our communities, region, state, and nation and for making students’ dreams come true.”

Luis is a 1972 college of business graduate and a member of the McIntosh Society.

“My commitment to UWG is strong because I believe in the rich history and the legacy of this institution,” he added.

Dr. Kyle Marrero, president of the university, thanked the donors as well and spoke of their significance.

“This collective group are the impetus for change as we embark on our first capital campaign,” he said. They provide us with a solid foundation to move this university to places we have only dreamed.”

After the medallions were presented, the recipients were treated to a reception in their honor in the Campus Center Ballroom.
