Professor Emeritus Establishes Endowment for Math Majors

by Sahil Gadhavi

If you have ever received or applied for a scholarship to pay for school then you can relate to University of West Georgia Professor of Mathematics Emeritus Dr. Earl Perry. Born into a financially poor family, he made his way through college with the help of charitable scholarships. Just like someone else had the confidence in him, today he continues to do the same for other scholars like him, no matter their background. He recently established an endowment in the sum of $50,000 for the mathematics department at UWG.

Alum Establishes Endowment for Math MajorsFor nearly 30 years, while he was teaching mathematics at UWG, he held memberships in Alpha Tau Omega national social fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership fraternity, Kappa Mu Epsilon national mathematics fraternity, as well as the Mathematical Association of America on top of his teaching responsibilities.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Perry has held several important positions in the Georgia education system. After he retired as a professor of mathematics at UWG in June 1990, he was designated professor of mathematics emeritus by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, an honor bestowed on only the best of the best.

Being an exceptionally well-rounded individual, he has inspired many to go onto successful careers through his own example. His dedication to help students learn has far exceeded the limitations of time.

“I am extremely pleased to be able to endow this scholarship,” Dr. Perry said. “I am also pleased to be able to state that I am within a few hundred dollars of having money accumulated to fund similar scholarship endowment agreements I have with my two alma maters.”

In addition to Dr. Perry’s acts of academic brilliance, his benevolence and dedication to the learning of mathematics has proved that one’s humble beginnings are never enough to overshadow one’s bright potential.
