UWG Freshman Receives Holland Scholarship

by Nikole Gianopoulos

University of West Georgia freshman Hannah Walker has been awarded the Hubert G. and Naomi C. Holland Scholarship Endowment for the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarship will cover all of Hannah’s educational expenses for four years, along with five other Paulding County residents, provided the GPAs remain above 2.5.

UWG Freshman Receives Holland Scholarship Hannah, nursing major and scholarship recipient says, “I am so thankful to have been chosen as a recipient for the Holland Scholarship. I got the opportunity to attend a homecoming service in honor of Mr. Hubert Holland and met his wife, Naomi.”

The scholarship was established with a gift from Hubert and Naomi Holland in 2006 with an additional contribution in 2012 from the estate of Hubert. An UWG alumnus, Hubert served the U.S. in the Korean War and then served his local community as a lawyer for more than 50 years. His legacy continues to provide financial support for students whom are residents of Paulding County.

“Hubert Holland and I had no children by blood, but we set up the scholarship to educate other children, born and unborn. The money will always be there for those who need it and want it,” confirms Mrs. Holland.

Matthew Thomas Bishop and Taylor Anne Hainley from North Paulding High and Hannah Michelle Liming from East Paulding High were Holland Scholars last year and had their award renewed this school year. Among the incoming freshmen Holland scholars are Hannah from East Paulding High, Madison Smith from King’s Way Christian and Shyanne Zeringue from Hiram High.

“We deeply appreciate their generosity and commitment to students at UWG,” says Executive Director of Development Diane Homesley, who also mentions that Hubert and Naomi Holland have created a lasting legacy with the Holland Scholarship that will benefit students from Paulding County for generations to come.

Hannah concludes, “I am extremely grateful for people like Hubert and Naomi Holland and their value in education. I am blessed, indeed!”
