Advance UWG

Advance UWGIn 1997, the year the current incoming freshman class was born, I and many friends walked across the stage in the H.P.E. Building to receive our undergraduate degrees from what was then known as the State University of West Georgia. My time at West Georgia is something I will always cherish. I made my very best friends, there. We all have been in each other’s weddings, been godparents to each other’s children, rejoiced in good times and mourned and comforted each other during times of sorrow. I learned so much about life and the world around me, and my time at West Georgia helped to shape me into the person I am today. After graduation, I felt my connection to West Georgia in many ways was unfortunately done and that there was no longer a place or role for me to remain connected with the university. Read more ...

Newspaper Run by Alum Receives National Recognition

Newspaper Run by Alum Receives National RecognitionIn a media environment that seemingly thrives on scandal and sensation, the McDuffie Progress goes against the grain by focusing on community development and childhood reading. The newspaper’s dedication to civic journalism has paid off, as it was recently named one of the “10 Newspapers That Do It Right” by Editor & Publisher Magazine, a 114-year old publication based in Irvine, California.

Based in Thomson, Georgia, the McDuffie Progress is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 3,000. This figure is even more startling when compared with fellow honorees--such as the San Francisco Chronicle, with a daily circulation of 201,996, and the Oklahoman, which peaks at 154,426 on Sundays. Advice for the First Time Homebuyer

You Can Go Home AgainReal estate is hyperlocal. Buying your first home is an important milestone in everyone’s lives. The first step to take is to research your local REALTORS® and choose the one that fits best. After that, getting pre- approved for a loan is next in line because otherwise, you are just window shopping. Zillow is a useful source, however listen to your REALTOR® for advice on where to look for the most accurate information on your local housing options. Once you have found a property that you like, it is a good idea to visit the location at different times of the day, so that you will be aware of who your potential neighbors could be.

Currently, it is a seller’s market, which means that there is more demand than there is supply. Homes will always sell at the market price because the market is ever changing. Read more ...

You Can Go Home Again

You Can Go Home AgainThomas Wolfe, famous author, borrowed the following phrase from a writing colleague. She said to him, "You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood ... back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame ... back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time – back home to the escapes of Time and Memory." Ella Winter said it, Thomas Wolfe wrote it, and I disagree with it.

You can go home again. You should go home again. Home is where we first dreamed of our futures. Home is where we made friends who would be with us forever, though not always as close, yet with us in spirit. Read more ...
