GreenCourt Sets the Bar High in First Year with Help from UWG AlumGreenCourt Legal Technologies, a company headed by University of West Georgia alum Bill Esslinger ‘93 that specializes in a statewide electronic filing system for Georgia’s trial courts, was recently presented with the Excellence in Innovation Award by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. The award recognizes the individuals, companies, nonprofits and organizations that are revolutionizing products, services and ways of doing things to create a better tomorrow for Georgia.

“We are honored to receive this award from Lt. Gov. Cagle,” says Bill, who is also a member of the UWG Foundation Board of Trustees. “GreenCourt is Georgia, through and through. Our company draws from Georgia investment, Georgia talent and Georgia partners. Our success will be accelerated because of our Georgia foundation.” Read more ...


Alumna Named Georgia’s Middle Level 2014 Distinguished Principal

Alumna Named Georgia’s Middle Level 2014 Distinguished PrincipalUniversity of West Georgia alumna Dr. Ardith Bates ’97 has been named Georgia’s Middle Level 2014 National Distinguished Principal. The honor is by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the United States Department of Education. Dr. Bates was nominated and selected by fellow principals and the Georgia Department of Education in a statewide search conducted by the Georgia Associa tion of Middle School Principals.

The award was presented by Dr. Bob Heaberlin, executive director of the Georgia Association of Middle School Principals (GAMSP) at an assembly held at Gladden Middle School in Chatsworth, Georgia, where Dr. Bates is currently entering her sixth year as principal. Read more ...

Keeping Things BalancedLife is truly one big balancing act. Between work, school, community and if you have children, we are amazing life- jugglers. I have recently added many things to my juggling act as well.

I am the assistant director of Alumni Relations at UWG, and this is a brand new position for me. I came into this new role on July 1 and have been enjoying my new responsibilities. UWG Alumni Association Hosts Freshmen Send-Off Parties The transition from a high school senior to an incoming college freshman can be overwhelming. To help remind students of how exciting this time can be, the UWG Alumni Association will host freshmen send-off parties for the incoming freshmen from Douglas, Cobb and Coweta Counties. The students are recent high school graduates who will be attending UWG in the fall of 2014.

Through food, fun and celebration these students will be welcomed into the UWG pack and shown what it means to be a part of the UWG community. Read more ...


UWG Alumna Promoted to Assistant Director

UWG Alumna Promoted to Assistant DirectorOver the past few months there have been several changes made to the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. University of West Georgia alumna Meredith Ledbetter, who graduated from UWG in 2009, has recently been promoted to assistant director of alumni relations.

Meredith transferred to UWG in 2007 in hopes of following in her father’s footsteps, who is an UWG alumnus. Read more ...

Alumna Elected President of AMLE’s Board of TrusteesUniversity of West Georgia alumna Dr. Kathleen McCaffrey ’05 ’11 has been elected as president of the Board of Trustees for the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). She currently serves as middle years program coordinator at Ridgeview International Baccalaureate Charter School in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

“I do not think I can express my excitement and pride in being president-elect without linking it to my excitement and pride over middle level education in the state of Georgia,” Dr. McCaffrey says. “Throughout the country many middle level educators look to us for leadership in the continued middle level movement. Whether it be through Schools to Watch or amazing teacher education programs like those at UWG, we have got it going on here in Georgia.” Read more ...

UWG Alumni Association Announces Second 30 Under 30 ClassThe University of West Georgia Alumni Association has announced its 30 Under 30 Class of 2014. The nomination process for the 2014 list was completed on May 1.

From teachers and doctors to accountants and media personalities, the second class of 30 Under 30 showcases a promising and already successful group of UWG alumni. Those nominated and chosen must have earned an undergraduate degree from the University of West Georgia and must be under the age of 30 as of August 31, 2014. Read more ...



UWG Alumni Gain International Attention with Launch of New App

UWG Alumni Gain International Attention with Launch of New AppUniversity of West Georgia alumni Jack and Jennifer Wall are celebrating the international success of their children’s game, Honey Bear Blitz. The game, which was developed as a mobile app, was created through a partnership with current UWG student, Samuel Stacey.

Jack and Jennifer graduated with degrees in business marketing and mass communications, while Samuel will graduate in December with a degree in computer science. They wanted to create an app that would be fun and entertaining for children to enjoy. By combining the skills they each acquired in their degree programs, App Creations by J&S was born. Alumni Weekend Celebrates Lillian WilliamsMost of us yearn for meaningful and purposeful lives, knowing that your contributions enrich the lives of others and make a difference. Working in higher ed, these opportunities abound yet nothing I have done in my 26 years at UWG compares to the satisfaction of being a part of planning and celebrating Lillian Williams during our recent Alumni Weekend.

In 1963, when Mrs. Williams became West Georgia’s first enrolled student of color, the Civil Rights Movement – and the people behind it – was changing America and she was one of those contributors. Read more ...



UWG Alumna Named Teacher of the Year

Alumna Named Clayton County Schools Library Media Specialist of the YearUniversity of West Georgia alumna Ashley Rickard was named 2014 Teacher of the Year for Newton County School System. The Eastside High School teacher and recent UWG graduate was presented a $1,000 prize, a crystal vase, three months free car rental from Covington Ford and a dozen roses during a special ceremony at Newton High School for her outstanding efforts in education.

Ashley has spent her entire teaching career in Newton County Schools, beginning at Eastside High School in 2009, teaching Advanced Placement English Language and Composition since her start. Read more ...
