UWise Summer STEM Scholars Academy Preps Incoming Freshmen

UWG, Birla College Begin Faculty Exchange AgreementMore than 30 incoming freshmen got a sneak peek at college life during this year’s installment of the University of West Georgia Institutional STEM Excellence (UWise) Summer Scholars Academy, which ran from June 29- July 24. The students—all interested in STEM disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, and math—were able to live on campus and attend college classes while earning six college credits.

“You’re now a full-fledged member of the Wolfpack,” UWG President Kyle Marrero announced to the students at the closing ceremony before leading them in a group howl. “You have finished your first step. It’s only about four weeks until you start classes in the fall, so rest up.” Read more ...

Young Mathematical Minds Converge for Summer ProgramThe University of West Georgia recently played host to a select number of exceptional undergraduate math majors through the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Dr. Bruce Landman, professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics, and Dr. Abdollah Khodkar, professor, served as senior faculty advisors. This year's program is the second installment of the highly competitive three-year National Science Foundation REU grant.

“The students were selected from a pool of over 100 applicants from throughout the United States,” explained Dr. Landman. “The program provides these students with a meaningful and sustained experience in conducting research in the mathematical areas of number theory, graph theory, and combinatorics.” Read more ...


UWG, Birla College Begin Faculty Exchange Agreement

UWG, Birla College Begin Faculty Exchange AgreementThe University of West Georgia recently hosted Dr. Avinash Patil, vice principal and associate professor of botany from the Birla College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, as part of a newly signed faculty exchange agreement with the University of Mumbai-affiliated school. His visit is the first in a series of discussions that will lead to mutual research and teaching opportunities for joint online course offerings and publication.

“Exchange visits such as this are potentially of great benefit to our colleagues and undergraduate and graduate students,” said Dr. Farooq Khan, dean of UWG’s College of Science and Mathematics (COSM). Read more ...

Rewarding Student Service: Faculty and Staff Advisor of the YearOn May 1, the Professional Association of Academic Advisors (PAAA) at the University of West Georgia held an end-of-year luncheon and presented the 2014-2015 Faculty Advisor of the Year and Staff Advisor of the Year awards. The awards were established by PAAA with the desire to encourage and reward excellence, creativity, and effectiveness in professional student advisement on UWG’s campus. Selection of the award winners relies on confidential nominations. Dr. Joseph Hendricks, professor of biology, received the honor of Faculty Advisor of the Year.

“Dr. Joseph ‘Joe’ Hendricks is a paragon of superb academic advising […] He truly enjoys his interactions with his advisees and constantly strives to have a positive effect on them,” the nominator wrote. Read more ...


UWG Hosts Annual LSAMP Symposium

UWG Hosts Annual LSAMP SymposiumThis Spring, the University of West Georgia hosted the Annual Georgia–Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. GA-AL LSAMP is funded by the National Science Foundation to mentor under-represented minorities into STEM disciplines. Over 100 undergraduate students from nine alliance partner institutions participated in this symposium and presented their research work.

“I am delighted to see the high quality research presented by the undergraduate students,” said Dr. S. Swamy Mruthinti, associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and the campus coordinator of LSAMP, who organized this symposium. Read more ...

UWG Students Get Young Racing Fans Revved Up about STEMWhat do NASA and NASCAR have in common? Plenty. Just ask Audrey Quartey-Lynch and Martina Smith, two students from the University of West Georgia’s UTeach program who recently led workshops at NASA’s Rockets 2 Racecars (R2R) event at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March. R2R is an event in collaboration with Jimmie Johnson Racing where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) converge to teach the parallels between aerospace and racing science.

“NASCAR is the most attended sport; think Super Bowl every single weekend,” said Dr. Lester Morales, NASA–Kennedy Space Center education professional development specialist. “It is the only sport where you get to see engineering in action during the competition.” Read more ...

UWG Hosts Sir CV Raman Post-doctoral Research FellowInternationally renowned scientist Dr. Estari Mamidala, a recipient of the prestigious Sir CV Raman Post-doctoral Research Award from the University Grants Commission in India, joined the laboratory of Dr. Swamy Mruthinti, professor of biology and associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics for one year starting September 2014. Dr. Mamidala is on sabbatical leave from his current job as an assistant professor of zoology at Kakatiya University in Warangal, India.

“Post-doctoral fellows, forces behind major discoveries in research, are very rare at UWG, and Dr. Mamidala is the only one in recent years,” said Dr. Mruthinti. “We are fortunate to have such a dedicated scientist to work with our undergraduate and graduate students.” Read more ...

UWG Ranked Highly by U.S. News for Online ProgramsThe University of West Georgia ranked highly in the recently released U.S. News & World Report online program rankings, with the online graduate computer information technology program ranking 16th in the nation.

“At UWG, student success is our first priority. That includes providing quality, accessible classes and degree programs for students who need or prefer the flexibility of online courses,” UWG President Kyle Marrero said. “We're excited that U.S. News & World Report has once again recognized several of our programs as among the top in the nation, and we look forward to expanding our online learning offerings to meet the growing needs of today's students and marketplace.” Read more ...
