High Level Donors Honored at Ceremony

High Level Donors Honored at CeremonyThe University of West Georgia recognized its top donors recently. Members of the 1906 Society attended a ceremony in December, where they were presented medallions in recognition of their generous gifts. The 1906 Society commemorates the founding year of West Georgia College, recognizing all gifts to UWG, regardless of what college, school, or program benefits from the gift. Once donors have given a cumulative total of $25,000 to UWG, they will be recognized with lifetime membership.

UWG alum Luis Planas was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He spoke of his and his wife Abrenda’s commitment to UWG and thanked those present for their commitment. Read more ...


Local Couple Gives Helping Hand to UWG Newnan Nursing Program

Local Couple Gives Helping Hand to UWG Newnan Nursing Program Phyllis and Jim Rogers of Newnan recently honored the University of West Georgia with the endowment of a scholarship for a UWG Newnan student as well as a monetary gift for the purchase of educational nursing equipment at the Coweta campus.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a UWG Newnan nursing student who has a 2.5 GPA or higher and demonstrates unmet financial need. The endowment will be known as the Phyllis and Jim Rogers Nursing Scholarship Fund. Phyllis Rogers, who worked in the former Newnan Hospital (now housing UWG Newnan) as a registered nurse, said she knows how difficult it can be to obtain an education. Read more ...


Lois Martin Endowed Scholarship Established for UWG Biology and Chemistry Students

Lois Martin Endowed Scholarship Established for UWG Biology and Chemistry StudentsThe University of West Georgia is pleased to announce the Lois Martin Endowed Scholarship. Lois’ son, Dr. Frederick “Rick” Martin, established the fund in honor of his mother. Dr. Martin started this fund in 1988 as an annual scholarship, benefiting more than 50 students. The now endowed scholarship, totaling $70,000, will be awarded annually to students majoring in biology or chemistry, and with an interest in pursuing a medical degree. This year’s recipients want to return to Carrollton and help those within the community.

Lois Martin was born in Clayton County, Alabama in 1911 on a farm with her parents and nine siblings. Read more ...


William Grady Hamrick III Campaign Legacy Endowment Announced

William Grady Hamrick III Campaign Legacy Endowment AnnouncedThe University of West Georgia Foundation is pleased to announce a $50,000 gift to the University of West Georgia from William “Bill” Grady Hamrick III, judge on the Superior Court of Georgia in the Coweta Circuit.

The gift establishes the William Grady Hamrick III Campaign Legacy Endowment using excess funds from his Senate campaigns and will be utilized to support UWG’s Ingram Library’s Special Collections, particularly the holdings related to Georgia’s political heritage. Judge Hamrick’s Senate papers are currently housed in the Annie Bell Weaver Special Collections. A portion of the gift will also be used to provide annual funding to support activities, projects, and programs such as conservation and digitization to increase public discovery and use of the political holdings housed in the library’s Special Collections. Hugh and Doris Brock Student Endowed Scholarship Fund EstablishedThe University of West Georgia is proud to announce the establishment of two endowed scholarships from the estate of Hugh L. and Doris H. Brock. The Hugh L. Brock, Jr. and the Doris Hollingsworth Brock Scholarship for Education and the Hugh L. Brock, Jr. and Doris Hollingsworth Brock Scholarship for Nursing Education will be awarded annually to UWG students in the College of Education and the Tanner Health System School of Nursing.

Hugh and Doris Brock have been generous lifelong supporters of UWG and the surrounding community for generations. Hugh was a retired farmer who selflessly dedicated his time to the Tanner Hospital Board of Trustees, serving as the chair for one term. A Day is a day for members of the UWG community, far and wide, to celebrate the university’s success. In fiscal year 2014-2015, UWG community members contributed more than $750,000 in cash gifts to the UWG Annual Fund, providing scholarships, laboratory equipment, recreational activities, and other initiatives and programs for the university’s schools, colleges, and athletic teams. The Gift of Education is Just a Phone Call AwayIf ever there was a model student, Lucero Delgado fits the bill and then some. Going into her second year here at UWG, she is a member of the Latino Culture Society, a student ambassador, she works two on-campus jobs, volunteers in the community, devotes her time as a mentor to freshmen protégés, and will be a semester ahead in her journey to complete her bachelor’s in business management by the end of the school year.

Yet, if it weren’t for the kindness and generosity of donors, none of this would be possible. Lucero is the recipient of two UWG scholarships based on community service and her GPA. She also is a HOPE scholar. And without the aid of these scholarships, Lucero’s college experience would be very different. Read more ...

Lindsey and Genet Barron Business Scholarship EstablishedThe Barron family has provided a generous gift of $25,000 to establish the Lindsey and Genet Barron Business Scholarship. The two sons of Lindsey and Genet Barron, Frank and Chip Barron, established this scholarship to honor their parents’ memory and life-long commitment to education.

Genet Heery Barron, born in Hapeville, Georgia, earned her teacher’s certificate from the University of West Georgia and spent her lifetime committed to the well-being and empowerment of young people. She served as the president of the Women’s Missionary Union of the Georgia Baptist Convention and as vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention Board of Foreign Missions. Read more ...

James Alfred Cochran Rising Star Scholarship Fund EstablishedFriends of late businessman and pillar of the West Georgia community, James Alfred “Al” Cochran, recently established a scholarship in his memory. The James Alfred “Al” Cochran Rising Star Scholarship will provide financial support for University of West Georgia students who are majoring in accounting.

“Al was a big part of the Greenway family. He, Tee and Brad guided us through the IPO process,” said William “Bill” Esslinger Jr. “He had a huge impact, not only on Greenway, but on our entire West Georgia community.” Read more ...
