University of West Georgia Advanced Academy alum Cole Simpson has received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland and a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship.

The University of West Georgia Honors College held its 2014 Honors Council Banquet on Thursday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. During the program, 49 graduating honors students were recognized for their scholastic achievements throughout their college careers.

Family, friends and faculty filled the main hall of the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts for the 2014 edition of the University of West Georgia Academic Honors Convocation. The annual event, a university tradition since 1964, is organized by a 13-member committee of the UWG Honors College and recognizes the superior scholarship of the undergraduate students that make up the UWG Honors College.
The event began with the processional of UWG faculty, dressed in academic regalia, and the student awardees. This was accompanied by a performance of William Walton’s “Crown Imperial,” performed by the UWG Wind Ensemble. Dr. Kyle Marrero, UWG president, gave a welcome address to the audience, providing a background history of the Honors Convocation and Honors College and expressing pride in the academic success of the honors students. University of West Georgia Honors College students and undergraduate researchers Tashana Haye, a senior, and Theresa Fuller, a freshman were accepted for presentation at the second annual Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference on January 24-25 in Columbus, Georgia.
GURC is a platform for outstanding undergraduate scholars and faculty mentors from all disciplines in the southeast region to share results based on outstanding research. This year’s research focused on employing functional genomics to study oxygenic photosynthesis and chlorophyll biosynthesis in a model green micro-alga chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Read more ...
The University of West Georgia varsity debate team, of junior Marquis Ard and sophomore Hakeem Muhammad, earned a first round at-large bid to participate in the 2014 National Debate Tournament. First round bids, voted on by a national selection committee, are based on regular season results and are only awarded to the top 16 teams in the country.
UWG has been awarded a first round bid 21 times in its history. Since 2000, the university has been awarded nine first round bids, making UWG eighth best in the nation, surpassed only by Northwestern, Emory, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Cal-Berkeley, Harvard and Dartmouth. Read more ...
