Teaching at the University of West Georgia – Newnan

Teaching at the University of West Georgia – NewnanThe fall semester for 2015 began my fifth year of teaching mathematics at the University of West Georgia. I grew up and lived in Arkansas for most of my life, moving to Georgia the month before starting UWG in Carrollton. I wasn’t sure if teaching was what I wanted to continue doing with my life, and not being familiar with the university, I was nervous to begin the school year. However, it was clear to me after the first semester that I was going to enjoy working at UWG. Faculty was encouraging and helpful, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the students were a joy to work with. I had never been so impressed by a student body before. Mathematics is a tough subject, but I was moved by how hard my students worked, how respectful they were in class, and how excited they were to be in college. After two years at UWG, I was then asked to teach a class at UWG in Newnan. Read more ...

College for a Day

College for a DayWhen I retrieve my morning papers at present, I often see lines of traffic, yellow buses dotting the vehicles, as I live near Newnan’s largest high school as well as an elementary school a homerun away from my back deck. Memories rush to me as I would not be gathering newspapers a decade ago, but gathering student papers at my rugged desk at Monroe High School.

Just last Friday, however, I went back to school as a marvelous event occurred in this magnificent Georgia town. Just this summer the University of West Georgia opened its campus here in Newnan. Most significantly, the buildings in current use were reconfigured to envelop a most beloved structure: Newnan Hospital. Somehow the loving spirits of those nurses and doctors who walked these halls seemed to infuse the atmosphere with energy. Read more ...

The Sky's the Limit

The Sky's the LimitOriginally from Fayetteville, Georgia, I moved to Newnan after being released from active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August 2003. I was aware of UWG Newnan and knew of its reputation, but the summer of 2008 fast tracked my decision to pursue my MBA.

I have been a licensed pilot for more than two-thirds of my life, flying commercially for over 14 years of my 37-year life span. I started flying at the age 0f 14, soloing my first airplane at the age of 16, and becoming licensed at the age of 17. I served as a flight instructor, charter pilot, captain with Atlantic Southeast Airlines, AirTran Airways, and then Southwest Airlines. I have a love of flying but 2008 opened my eyes to the volatility of my industry. Read more ...

Business Dreams Achieved

Business Dreams AchievedI got my first job at the age of 15 at a locally owned restaurant in the heart of downtown Newnan. I chose to work for small businesses throughout high school at NHS and college at the University of West Georgia. I always hoped to one day own my own business, but I knew I needed to put in the work of learning and understanding the intricacies of small business ownership if I wanted it to succeed.

After graduating from UWG in 2004 with my degree in business management, I continued to hone my skills in the hospitality industry with a management position at The Farmhouse Restaurant in Serenbe. It was while in this position that I fell in love with event management. Read more ...

Making a Difference

Making a DifferenceIt's hard to believe that it's already been a year, but I graduated from UWG's Newnan School of Nursing December 2013 and was hired almost immediately a nurse in the emergency department at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Expecting that I would be smitten with the pace and intensity of emergency medicine, I requested it for my final clinical rotation and was fortunate enough to find placement at PNH. On my second day, a patient came to us in full cardiac arrest, and I was pulled in the room to help. About 10 seconds into the code, watching everyone around me operate seamlessly in a ballet of controlled chaos, I was hooked. Armed with my newfound career direction and some excellent clinical experience, I parlayed that rotation into a staff position. Read more ...

Going West and Finding My Path

Going West and Finding My PathThe University of West Georgia Newnan location has proven to be a natural fit for me and what I wanted out of my college experience. It was important that I be able to continue to live at home and attend classes close by. My plans were to gain part time employment and to enroll as a full time student. UWG Newnan met all the requirements. I did not necessarily have a particular degree in mind when I began college; but, as many do, I began with the basic core classes and established myself as a serious college student.

During my first semester in Newnan, I became aware of a job opportunity working in the Newnan Student Information Technology Services office. Read more ...
