UWG Ignite Service Project Benefits Carroll County Ferst FoundationAs part of a service project for literacy, University of West Georgia Ignite students have painted two playhouses that will be raffled this weekend to benefit the Carroll County Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy.

UWG Ignite is a program in which students who are conditionally accepted for fall admission are given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to succeed in college-level work. The students spend their summer at UWG and take two courses, XIDS 2100 Media and Arts and POLS 1101 American Government. A passing grade in both courses allows the students full admission for the upcoming fall semester. Read more ...

Circles of West Georgia Holds Poverty SimulationOn March 26, the nonprofit organization Circles of West Georgia held its very first poverty simulation at the University of West Georgia. Circles of West Georgia is a nonprofit organization in Carrollton with a stated mission to inspire and equip families and communities to thrive and end poverty. While many people think of poverty as an isolated problem, it affects over 20,000 families in Carroll County alone.

During the simulation, volunteers from UWG and the Circles organization role-played to help members better understand what people experiencing poverty endure. Read more ...


Publications and Printing Receives National Recognition

Publications and Printing Receives National RecognitionThe University of West Georgia’s Publications and Printing recently earned a bronze award for print excellence from the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA). The award was for the Spring 2014 issue of Perspective magazine. UWG previously received awards in print excellence from IPMA in 2012, 2009, and 2005.

More than 400 entries were submitted to this year’s contest. Judges looked for numerous details, such as even ink coverage without color variation from page to page, whether image registration is perfectly in alignment, evenly-printed solids, perfect folding and stapling, good design, and no errors, like ghost images or track marks, on the printed piece.

Memorial Day WeekendThe University of West Georgia expresses its gratitude to the service and dedication to all those who have served in uniform and encourages you to be safe as you enjoy the long holiday weekend. UWG will be flying flags at half-staff throughout the holiday weekend to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts that 33 million Americans will travel the roadways this holiday weekend, making this the most traveled Memorial Day in a decade. For those wishing to avoid the traffic and stay local, there are a number of community events commemorating the men and women of the armed forces who have sacrificed their lives as well as multiple events to kick off the unofficial start of summer.

Undergraduate Research Spotlighted for Research Day On March 25, students from all UWG colleges participated in Research Night, which gave undergraduates a chance to showcase their recent research and have it judged within their own college. First-place winners from last month’s Research Night will be presenting during Big Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Campus Center Ballroom.

UWG’s Big Night is celebrating its 17th year highlighting undergraduate research in the fields of business, education, nursing, fine arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. UWG Marks Earth Week 2015 With Full Calendar of EventsSustainability is an increasingly important social, corporate, political and scientific issue. It is also one of the key focus points of the University of West Georgia’s strategic plan for campus and community development. The university participates in eco-friendly causes such as Arbor Day, Tree Campus USA, and Recycle Mania. In accordance with its green commitment, UWG is currently celebrating its second annual Earth Week through April 16.

Sponsored by UWG’s Sustainability Council, Earth Week 2015 festivities promise several exciting and engaging events, beginning with “Rake the Lake,” which took place on April 4, during which students helped clean up around the GreenBelt by Lake Carroll. Read more ...


Spring Commencement Ceremonies Set for Saturday

Spring Commencement Ceremonies Set for SaturdayThe University of West Georgia's spring commencement ceremonies will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in UWG's Coliseum. The ceremony will also be streamed online.

The morning ceremony will feature graduates from the College of Education, College of Arts & Humanities, and the Tanner Health System School of Nursing. Gregory A. Adams will be the keynote speaker.

The afternoon ceremony will feature graduates from the Richards College of Business, College of Social Sciences, and College of Science and Mathematics, at which Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle will be the speaker. Read more ...


Electrical Vehicle Charging Station Unveiled

Electrical Vehicle Charging Station UnveiledThe University of West Georgia’s very first vehicle charging station is now fully operational. The station is a charge point dual port unit that will charge two vehicles simultaneously and independently from one another. The two spaces are located in the Pafford parking lot next to the TLC. This move is the latest of UWG’s efforts to create a more environmentally friendly campus.

“We are exploring many green initiatives on campus as well as refining the ones we currently undertake,” said Project Manager Seth Lambert.“We have staff involved with sustainability clubs and project managers obtaining leadership in energy and environment design certifications to help design greener projects.” Read more ...


More than the Paper

Get Caught #GreenHanded with UWGIt seems ancient history by this point, but on December 13, 2014 the fall Class of 2014, composing of several hundred students, graduated with various degrees ranging from Doctoral all the way to bachelor degrees. I was one of them.

For most, graduation consists of walking a platform for five seconds, shaking hands with the university president and dean of the college you got your degree in, and being given a rather torturous piece of paper. This paper leaves open the possibility you spent an entire morning of your life for something you had no right being at in the first place – a rather brutal position to be in if you don’t have all of your grades at that time. Throughout his 19-year academic career, Dr. Shropshire has been recognized as an expert on methods of creating effective diversity strategies for academic institutions. Get Caught #GreenHanded with UWGThe University of West Georgia’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability is easy to see. In its efforts to ensure a greener campus, UWG has completed several milestones, such as the addition of the all-electric Nissan Leaf vehicle to its fleet and its Tree Campus USA designation.

In its latest efforts in the “green” vein, UWG is participating in the RecycleMania 2015 tournament, a national initiative that sees colleges all over the country try to collect the largest amount of recyclable waste in different categories. Read more ...


Regional Economic Impact Exceeds $455 Million

Regional Economic Impact Exceeds $455 MillionThe University of West Georgia contributed over $455,593,962 million to the west Georgia regional economy in fiscal year 2013. Marking the sixth year of consecutive growth, this amount is a significant increase from the previous year’s $442 million. The report, commissioned by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia through University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, reported a $14.1 billion economic boost from institutions of higher learning across the state.

“UWG is committed to being the hub of economic growth in the region. We're so dedicated to that concept that we wrote it into our strategic plan,” said UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero.

UWG Lands $150,000 Stanley Security GrantThe University of West Georgia has been named the recipient of the $150,000 TOGETHER FOR SAFER SCHOOLS grant thanks to thousands of Wolf fans who voted in a nationwide contest sponsored by STANLEY Convergent Security Solutions, Inc. STANLEY Security presented UWG with the official award at the university’s annual Police Awards Banquet on the evening of March 16.

“The community members surrounding the University of West Georgia have proven to be incredible advocates for the safety and security of its students since day one of this contest. We are thrilled to announce UWG as the winner of a $150,000 grant,” said Kyle Gordon, director, higher education – North America for STANLEY Security. Read more ...


UWG Among Most Promising Places to Work in America

UWG Receives 4th Consecutive Tree Campus USA AwardThe University of West Georgia was recently named one of the top 15 Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs by the Center for Higher Education Enterprise (CHEE) in partnership with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Schools were chosen based on workplace diversity, staffing practices, and work environment at colleges and universities throughout the country.

This list included schools such as Florida State University, University of Alabama, Youngstown State University, Sweet Briar College, and Ohio State University. The list was published February 26, in Diverse Magazine. Read more ...

UWG Receives 4th Consecutive Tree Campus USA AwardFor the fourth year in a row, the University of West Georgia has earned a Tree Campus USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota. The national program was launched in 2008 to promote healthy trees on college campuses and engage students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

To obtain this distinction, UWG has met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Fair is a One-Stop Shop for Upcoming GradsOnce again this year, the Registrar’s Office is hosting the 2015 Graduation Fair on March 10 and 11 in The Coliseum. The fair is open mainly to students who are planning to graduate in the coming year, but any students are welcome to attend.

Students who attend the Graduation Fair can take care of many details associated with graduation all in one stop, like a one stop shopping experience. They can purchase a cap and gown, order announcements, make arrangements for their graduation photos, and sign up for alumni services, just to name a few.

Protect the Pack by Taking Back the NightThe University of West Georgia is joining ranks with other universities across the country to stop sexual violence as students, faculty, and staff get ready for the second annual Take Back the Night event on Monday, March 9, at 8 p.m.

For the second year, UWG students, staff and area community members will take part in a luminary walk then gather in Love Valley to speak out against sexual violence and make a personal commitment to keep men and women safe from sexual assault. This year, students are encouraged to Protect the Pack, as UWG launches a renewed initiative in this endeavor and partners with the White House’s It’s On Us campaign.

From Internationals, A “Super” NightInternational Night at the University of West Georgia has become something of a tradition for the campus and community. This year, that tradition marked its 30th year as UWG's International Student Club (ISC) hosted the 2015 edition of the annual culture fest.

Themed "Supernationals," this year's event was moved from the traditional venue of Z6 to the Campus Center Ballroom. However, this change did not affect the food, fun, and festivities that International Night has come to be known and loved for.

UWG Celebrates Arbor Day with Tree Planting at Stadium On March 5, the University of West Georgia will be celebrating Arbor Day with a tree planting at University Stadium– albeit a little late due to inclement weather.

Arbor Day is celebrated on the third Friday in February each year in Georgia and is supported by the national Arbor Day Foundation. Georgia residents plant trees in February rather than April – on National Arbor Day – because it is too warm in Georgia during that time of year to plant trees, as they will not have a chance to become established before our summer heat sets in.

Wolves Abroad Grant Allows Students to Gain Global PerspectiveThe University of West Georgia has introduced a new study abroad program called Wolves Abroad Grant or WAG for short. Grants range from $1,500-5,000, depending on the length of the program the student is participating in.

"The Wolves Abroad Grant program is a new initiative designed to help talented students who have never had the opportunity to travel outside the country before take advantage of the chance to gain global perspective through study abroad,” said Dr. Maria Doyle, Director of International Services and Programs.

Counseling Center Wins Big at GCCAThe Georgia College Counseling Association recently held its annual award ceremony, and the University of West Georgia was well represented, to say the least. Acknowledged at the ceremony were Director of the UWG Counseling Center Dr. Lisa Adams Somerlot, Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Dr. Alicia Caudill, and Outreach Coordinator Terri Ducker.

The coveted Program of the Year award was granted to UWG’s Counseling Center Outreach Program for their outstanding development of a unique clinical program for college students across campus.

Volunteers Needed to Help Stop HungerThe University of West Georgia and the Carrollton community are facing a unique opportunity this coming weekend to help combat hunger, both internationally and locally.

The Stop Hunger Now event will be in the UWG Coliseum on Saturday, February 21, followed by the Carroll County Empty Bowls Project on Sunday, February 22 at the Carroll County Ag Center. Both events promise to provide hours of community service and volunteer opportunities.

Long-time Architect Wins Distinguished Service AwardIn promotion of his concert at Mill Town Music Hall in Bremen on Friday, January 30, Kris Allen visited the University of West Georgia for a CD signing. The “Live Like We’re Dying” singer walked into the university bookstore with a smile as his adoring fans warmly welcomed him. The American Idol winner was more than happy to converse, sign autographs, give hugs, and take pictures.

For over a decade American Idol has graced the televisions of millions of households. From the entertaining audition episodes to the nerve-racking announcement of who the next American Idol will be, the series has left a memorable mark on primetime television.

Long-time Architect Wins Distinguished Service AwardHer resume reads like the reference box of a University of West Georgia campus map: Arbor View, Campus Center, Coliseum, Stadium, Greek Village, Nursing Building, Visual Arts Building, Center Pointe – University Architect Elsa Pena has played a major role in all of them. Overall, she has had an impact on over 1 million of the total 2.6 million square feet of building space on campus.

And for her efforts and her reputation, the University System of Georgia honored her with the Distinguished Service Award that was presented to her at a conference in Savannah in October. The award is only given to one person a year in the university system.

Annual MLK Event Features Dr. Steve Perry“We are inevitably our brother's keeper because we are our brother's brother.” Those eternal words by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. provided the main question at the University of West Georgia’s sixth annual Dr. Martin Luther King program.

Themed “Are We One Another’s Keeper?,” the event, which was hosted by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Honors College and Advanced Academy, was organized to mark the 2015 MLK Day as well as celebrate and reiterate his legacy of equality and justice for all. UWG senior Jeremiah Morton, a member of the African American Male Initiative and Black Men Encouraging Success, emceed the program.

LiveArt at the Townsend Center Features Grammy Winning Vocal QuartetThe University of West Georgia's Townsend Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present legendary vocal quartet, The Manhattan Transfer, on Friday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m.

As the headliner for the LiveArt 2015 Gala and the twenty-sixth season, The Manhattan Transfer with Jazz Trio is the eighth installment of the Townsend Center’s annual fundraiser. According to John L. Walters of the London Jazz News, “There’s no act remotely like New York’s Manhattan Transfer. The close harmony vocal quartet can do everything from doo-wop to Broadway…from big band swing to fusion.”

UWG Presents at Annual School Counselor ConferenceSeveral representatives from the University of West Georgia attended the Georgia School Counselor Association’s Annual Conference in Augusta in November. The theme for the conference was “A Voice for Students.”

Erin Layton, senior admissions representative for guidance counselor communications at UWG, led a presentation with the University of Georgia’s senior assistant director of admissions, Wade LaFontaine, called “Advocating for Your Applicants.” The workshop was designed to help counselors understand differences between selective and non-selective university admissions processes, deferred action students and the challenges they face in the admissions process, changes to the SAT, and important FAFSA information.

UWG Applies for Stanley Security GrantOne of the primary functions of the University of West Georgia Police Department is to maintain safety and security on the campus for its some 12,000 students and all of the faculty and staff members. In order to provide a more secure environment, UWGPD has applied for the Stanley Security TOGETHER FOR SAFER SCHOOLS Grant.

In order to obtain the grant, UWG has the opportunity to invite the public to login and vote for UWG. After the voting period, the top two schools receiving the most votes will win security grants from Stanley in the amount of $150,000 for first place and $50,000 for second place.

Share Your Achievements with Points of PrideThere’s a new and more convenient way for the University of West Georgia community to share their accomplishments and be recognized. The Office of the President and University Communications and Marketing have unveiled the Points of Pride submission form located at www.westga.edu/ucm/1792.php.

Accomplishments can be submitted from any school, for any student, staff, faculty member, or alumnus, ranging from personal to professional achievements. They could range from quirky to normal awards that are often received.

Special Collections at UWG’s Ingram Library Receives Ingo Swann PapersThe family of Ingo Swann and his former colleagues, along with University of West Georgia Department of Psychology Chair Dr. Don Rice and other faculty, gathered in Ingram Library recently to celebrate the donation of the papers and book collection of Ingo Swann (1933-2013), a writer, artist, and psychic who notably was involved in the Stargate Project, a United States program which investigated whether psychic phenomenon had domestic and military applications during the Cold War.

Swann’s papers will be placed in UWG's Special Collections.

UWG Employees Donate to Carroll County Emergency ShelterIn its ongoing commitment to reach out to the community, the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management team of the University of West Georgia recently donated canned goods and toiletry items to the Carroll County Emergency Shelter.

The UWG employees collected and delivered the items to the Carroll County Emergency Shelter Administrator Martha Boyce during their annual SAEM Divisional Holiday Celebration.

“I am very pleased that our Divisional Social Committee decided to include the food drive effort as part of our annual holiday event,” explained UWG Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Scot Lingrell. Read more ...

Long Time Health Services Nurse RetiresThe University of West Georgia recently said goodbye to one of its beloved nurses. Denise A. Parham retired on January 1, 2015. She has been working at UWG for 20 years, all while inspiring and changing lives of young women.

“I love providing the health care and teaching the females,” Denise said. “I love watching them blossom and grow beyond the challenges and setbacks that they inquire along this journey called life.”

She graduated from Grady Memorial Hospitals School of Nursing in 1975 and later attended the nursing practitioner program at Emory Training Center OB/GYN. Read more ...


Marrero Named One of Georgia’s Most Influential

Marrero Named One of Georgia’s Most InfluentialGeorgia Trend has named University of West Georgia President Dr. Kyle Marrero to its annual list of 100 Most Influential Georgians. Dr. Marrero joins top business, political, and cultural leaders in the state. This is his first appearance on the competitive list.

“To be named one of the 100 most influential Georgians is both a tremendous honor and a tremendous responsibility,” Dr. Marrero said. “It means that people are watching UWG—and expecting great things from us. I believe we will deliver on those expectations.”

UWG Announces New Additions to Study Abroad ProgramThe University of West Georgia has three new opportunities for students to spend a semester abroad while earning credit towards their UWG degrees. This fall, the institution signed exchange agreements with universities in the Netherlands, Ireland, and Australia that will provide students in a variety of disciplines the chance to gain global experience while customizing their degree programs.

Exchange programs allow students from UWG to study with a partner school in another country for a semester or a year.
