UWG Presents Stu Thorn as BB&T Lecture Series Speaker

SSBH Program Scholarship Renamed in Honor of Stu ThornTickets are now on sale for the spring installment of the BB&T Lectures in Free Enterprise series, sponsored by the University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business. This semester’s speaker will be former Southwire President and CEO Stu Thorn, who will bring more than 30 years of executive experience to students on February 8. Stu’s topic for the event will be “How to Change the World Without Changing a Thing: Leveraging Capitalism to Create Shared Value.”

“My speech’s focus topic will be on how the power of capitalism, as it exists now, despite all its dangers, can be leveraged to solve social problems, via shared values,” said Stu. “As an example of shared values, I’ll draw on Southwire’s win-win educational initiatives.” Read more ...


Bringing Home the Gold

Bringing Home the GoldFour University of West Georgia students returned home from India last week with a little something extra to place on the mantle above their stockings. Standing two and a half feet tall and shimmering in gold, it may just outshine any other present these students receive this year.

Richards College of Business students Earvin Anumgba, Miringu Kiarie, Emily Phillippi, and Natysha Wright returned this week from a 10-day trip to the 23rd International Economic Convention in Mumbai, India, with four big prizes: “Best Paper,” “Best Presentation,” “Best Speaker,” and the top prize (represented by the giant, gold-colored trophy in the photo) of “Best Overall.” UWG brought home a total of 14 awards from the event. SSBH Program Scholarship Renamed in Honor of Stu Thorn

SSBH Program Scholarship Renamed in Honor of Stu ThornEarlier this year, Southwire Company, the largest producer of electrical wire and cables in North America, gifted two four-year scholarships to two incoming University of West Georgia freshmen in the Richards College of Business. The Carrollton-based company awarded the students with what was previously known as the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors (SSBH) Program Scholarship.

The four-year scholarship has been renamed the Stuart Thorn Scholarship in honor of Southwire’s outgoing CEO and President Stu Thorn. Stu’s 20-year legacy of executive leadership and high-impact accomplishments includes roles such as directing all North American operations, overseeing international business operations, and leading the creation of the 12 for Life program. Richards College of Business Names David H. Hovey Distinguished ScholarRichards College of Business Names David H. Hovey Distinguished ScholarUWG's Richards College of Business named Dr. Tom Gainey, UWG professor and chair of the department of management, as the first David H. Hovey Distinguished Scholar, funded by the Hardy and Merryl McCalman Foundation.

“I am so honored to be named the David H. Hovey Distinguished Scholar,” said Dr. Gainey. “Dr. Hovey was highly respected by his colleagues in the Richards College of Business for his many years of leadership, teaching, and service. Dave was a mentor to me, and he was my friend. I look forward to serving as the inaugural David H. Hovey Distinguished Scholar for the next three years.”

In addition to his duties as chair, Dr. Gainey teaches several courses in the Richards College of Business, including Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior, and Human Resources Management, just to name a few. Read more ...

Richards College of Business Hosts Annual Economic BreakfastAt the annual Economic Forecast Breakfast recently hosted by the University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business, business and community leaders received some good news: things are looking up for west Georgia.

According to Department of Economics Chair Dr. Joey Smith, west Georgia is seeing a rise in the labor market as well as a reduction in unemployment claims.

"Which means despite the fact we have more people entering the workforce, those people are still able to find jobs," said Dr. Smith. Read more ...

The Rock ‘n’ Roll EconomistUniversity of West Georgia Richards College of Business economics professor Kim Holder knows that students don’t necessarily get excited about an economics class. However, she is being recognized for her innovative techniques in the classroom because she has found a way to help them learn the principles of economics while simultaneously fostering creative expression.

Kim, who is also director for the UWG Center for Economic Education, has been awarded first place in the 2015 Economist Educators Best in Class Teaching Award for her unique and pioneering techniques in the classroom. Read more ...

Johnny “Cupcakes” Wows the Crowd at BB&T LectureUniversity of West Georgia students, faculty, staff, and the west Georgia community filled a sold-out, standing-room-only Townsend Center on October 19 to hear BB&T Lectures in Free Enterprise speaker Johnny “Cupcakes” Earle share his tips for business success during the biannual talk hosted by UWG’s Richards College of Business.

Named BusinessWeek’s No. 1 Entrepreneur under 25, Johnny has built a graphic T-shirt empire by selling shirts in his vintage-style “bakeries” across the United States. He began with a shop in Boston, and now has locations in Los Angeles, Hull, Martha’s Vineyard, and London. Read more ...


UWG Enactus Students Invited to Work with Walmart

UWG Enactus Students Invited to Work with WalmartUniversity of West Georgia Richards College of Business Enactus team recently attended an annual fall training conference hosted by the international Enactus office to assist student leaders in creating sustainable projects for the school year. Walmart sponsored this year’s conference in Alpharetta, which led to five UWG students being offered either an internship or a job with the Walmart Corporation.

“It takes a lot of dedication outside of class to participate on an Enactus team,” said Monica Smith, Richards College of Business lecturer and ENACTUS advisor. “I am so proud of our students and excited for them as they begin their career journeys.” Read more ...

UWG Invites Successful Women to Talk “Taboo Topics”Women from all over west Georgia gathered recently at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s Burson Center in Carrollton to hear some sage advice from four successful professionals – who also happen to be women – during the annual Women Empowering Women panel hosted by UWG’s Richards College of Business.

This year’s panel discussion, entitled “Taboo Topics for Women in Business,” featured Becky Blalock, managing partner at Advisory Capital and author of “DARE,” and former senior vice president and chief information officer for Southern Company; Missy Dugan, president and chief executive officer for Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta; Erica Qualls-Battey, general manager and chief executive officer of Atlanta Marriott Marquis; and Laura Travis, director of grants services at The Nature Conservancy. UWG Welcomes Johnny “Cupcakes” Earle as He Talks Business Start-UpsStudents and community members interested in starting their own businesses could learn a thing or two from Johnny “Cupcakes” Earle, owner and founder of Johnny Cupcakes T-shirt bakery. The enterprising entrepreneur started 16 businesses before he was 16 years old, and the University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business is welcoming him to the Townsend Center for Performing Arts in less than two weeks.

Johnny has made millions of dollars by selling T-shirts from his vintage-style T-shirt “bakeries” and has been named BusinessWeek’s No. 1 Entrepreneur Under 25. Lindsey and Genet Barron Business Scholarship Established

James Alfred Cochran Rising Star Scholarship Fund EstablishedThe Barron family has provided a generous gift of $25,000 to establish the Lindsey and Genet Barron Business Scholarship.

Genet Heery Barron, born in Hapeville, Georgia, earned her teacher’s certificate from the University of West Georgia and spent her lifetime committed to the well-being and empowerment of young people. She served as the president of the Women’s Missionary Union of the Georgia Baptist Convention and as vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention Board of Foreign Missions. She went on mission trips to China and Africa. For many years, Genet served as director of the Girl’s Auxiliary at the First Baptist Church of Newnan. Read more ...

 


James Alfred Cochran Rising Star Scholarship Fund Established

James Alfred Cochran Rising Star Scholarship Fund EstablishedFriends of late businessman and pillar of the West Georgia community, James Alfred “Al” Cochran, recently established a scholarship in his memory. The James Alfred “Al” Cochran Rising Star Scholarship will provide financial support for University of West Georgia students who are majoring in accounting.

“Al was a big part of the Greenway family. He, Tee, and Brad guided us through the IPO process,” said William “Bill” Esslinger Jr. “He had a huge impact, not only on Greenway, but on our entire West Georgia community.” Read more ...
