Eight University of West Georgia Richards College of Business 2014 graduates were recently offered an opportunity to work in Walmart’s Management Training Program. Students were interviewed at UWG’s first ever Second Chance Interview Day Program, hosted by the Richards College of Business Enactus group.

The Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia welcomed several business professionals on April 11, 2014, as part of the 2nd Annual SAS Analytics Summit. Participants, speakers and students gathered in the UWG Coliseum to discuss analytic software and advancements being made and instituted in current businesses.
Statistical Analytic Software or SAS is a united software system for business solutions that allows business professionals to easily perform business-related tasks. Fifty outstanding junior, senior and graduate students were recognized and inducted into the honor business society of Beta Gamma Sigma. The induction was held at Sunset Hill Country Club by the Richards College of Business of the University of West Georgia.
Induction into Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Richards College of Business. An invitation to join is extended only to the top 10 percent of second-semester juniors, the top 10 percent of seniors, and the top 20 percent of graduate students with majors in business. UWG’s Richards College of Business students in the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors Program recently received their “Blackshirt,” an honor among Southwire employees for participating in at least two Project Gift events per year. The students in the cohort regularly volunteer in the community as part of the service component of the program.
Funded by a $1.1 million gift from Southwire, the program allows participants to complete a BBA in economics, finance, management, marketing or real estate, plus a Master of Business Administration degree and a certificate of sustainability in only four years. The program also offers many opportunities for service and experiential learning, including a one-on-one mentorship by a Southwire employee and internship possibilities. Read more ...
“You have the opportunity to reshape the world now” are few of the many encouraging words Dr. Curtis Carver Jr. shared with hundreds of UWG students as he recently keynoted the Richards College of Business BB&T lecture series, held Monday, April 7, in the campus center ballroom.
Dr. Carver, who serves as the vice chancellor and chief information officer for the University System of Georgia lectured on “Emerging Threats, Emerging Opportunities: Thriving in the New Normal.” The lecture delved into and examined the underlying causes and reasons for both concern and optimism. It was a night of communication and collaboration as the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia presented the McCalman Roundtable 6 p.m. April 8. UWG students and faculty members gathered in the Executive Dining Room of the Z-6 to meet and dine with distinguished leaders in business and participate in an open roundtable business discussion.

UWG’s Richards College of Business hosted a “Future Faculty Lunch” on April 2, offering a chance for students to ask questions to faculty members regarding why they should consider getting a doctoral degree in business. Each faculty member told students their story on becoming a professor for the University of West Georgia and what it took to attain all of their degrees.

Lecture room 1201 in the Richards College of Business was full of energy from students and faculty members of the University of West Georgia as RCOB hosted Big Night, also known as Research Night, on March 26 at 7 p.m. The evening showcased nine presentations from 12 business majors. Participating students were given the opportunity to present their intense research in order to compete for monetary prizes and overall recognition from the Richards College of Business. The winner of Richards College of Business Big Night will go on to compete in the university’s overall Big Night competition on April 15. Read more ...
University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business student, Sandra Santiago, was awarded first place in this year’s Academy of Economics and Finance Undergraduate Paper Competition in Economics. The winner was announced at the 51st Annual AEF Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which students were unable to attend due to inclement weather conditions.
Sandra’s paper, titled “Predicting the Quality of Red Wine,” examined the measurable chemical characteristics of Portuguese red wines to predict wine quality measured subjectively by wine experts’ tasting data. Read more ...
In March, the University of West Georgia Richards College of Business held an Employer Showcase featuring Wal-Mart and Walmart.com. During the event, top-level Wal-Mart employees provided a great deal of insight to students regarding the company’s corporate culture, advice for career searching and more. The students also had the opportunity to engage in a networking session with the Wal-Mart representatives.
Keri Burns, UWG’s director of Career Services, began the event by introducing Jermaine Jackson, area manager for Walmart.com. Jermaine introduced multiple speakers representing a wide variety of Wal-Mart departments. Read more ...
