UWG Sweeps Competition at 21st International Economic ConventionThe University of West Georgia Richards College of Business student team had a spectacular showing at the 21st International Economic Convention in Mumbai, India, winning first place in all six team categories including “Best Overall,” “Most Innovative Solution,” “Best Q&A,” “Best Coordination Among Team Members,” “Best Paper” and “Best Presentation.”

UWG Professor Named University Fuller E. Callaway Endowed Chair

UWG Professor Named University Fuller E. Callaway Endowed ChairDr. Swarna “Bashu” Dutt, a professor of economics at the University of West Georgia, has been named as a University Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair. Dr. Dutt is the third UWG professor to receive this honor, with professor Howard E. Taylor serving from 1971 to 1987 and professor Jerry D. Perkins serving from 1991 to 2001.

Richards College of Business Hosts "Cans for a Cause"

Richards College of Business Hosts "Cans for a Cause"Students at the Richards College of Business put their heads together to keep Carrollton residents from going hungry during their annual Cans for a Cause food drive. The program promotes leadership, teamwork and friendly competition between student organizations in the business school. Several students representing each group attended the November 21 awards ceremony, where they kept warm with the hot chocolate bar while waiting for the winners to be announced around 11 a.m. Afterward, students loaded the haul onto a truck and delivered it to the Carrollton soup kitchen.

“It brings the students closer to the community and allows them to interact with those people on a personal basis,” explains Dr. Doug Turner, associate dean of Richards College of Business. Read more ...


UWG Professor and Student Speak at Southern Company for Veteran’s Day

UWG Professor and Student Speak at Southern Company for Veteran’s DayDr. Erich Bergiel, a professor of management at the University of West Georgia, spoke at Southern Company’s “Honoring Our Veterans” program on November 11, 2013. Dr. Bergiel, who is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, teaches courses at the UWG Richards College of Business. The ceremony was held at the Georgia Power headquarters and broadcasted to the rest of Southern Company’s employees.

Dr. Bergiel spoke about common misconceptions of veterans, as well as the benefits of hiring retired members of the military. “It was really an honor to be asked to speak,” he says. “Given my experience in both business and the military, I was able bring a unique perspective. I think it shows that we're definitely moving in a new direction.” Read more ...

Economic Forecast Breakfast Offers 2014 PredictionsIn October, the University of West Georgia invited local and regional businesses to campus for the annual economic forecast breakfast, presented by the Richards College of Business, Department of Economics and Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. Three economic experts provided insight into their 2014 predictions on the local, state and national levels. The overall prediction? Primarily positive.

Dr. William “Joey” Smith, associate professor of economics and director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at UWG, offered his insight into the state of the west Georgia region including Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson, Paulding and Polk counties. Read more ...

Economics Professor Creates Useful Economics Website For Students
TDr. Swarna (Bashu) Dutt, Fuller E. Callaway Endowed Chair and Professor of Economics at the University of West Georgia, is the creator and writer of a newly implemented economics text/study guide website named econmentor.com. The website is aimed specifically at helping upper level high school students and college students who are struggling at understanding economics.

Dr. Dutt decided to create econmentor.com in 2005 after having difficulty explaining and clarifying the difference between movement and shift of the demand curve in one of his classes. He began to make a list of 15 multiple choice questions from specific class topics to give to his students to practice, and he received noticeably better test results from doing so. Read more ...

UWG Alum Inspires Women in BusinessThe University of West Georgia and the Richards College of Business welcomed alumna, author and former Southern Company CIO Becky Blalock to campus on October 24. Becky spent the whole day on campus and spoke at multiple events, including one lecture at 7 p.m. that was free and open to the public. Becky also signed copies of her most recent book titled DARE: Straight Talk on Confidence, Courage and Career for Women in Charge.

Becky’s newest book was written to support and encourage women in business. “You learn from mistakes, but you don’t have to learn from your own!” Becky tells the audience, speaking from experience. “Learn from somebody else’s mistakes. There are some mistakes in this book that I made, that will hopefully keep other people from making them.” Read more ...

Richards College of Business Hosts Brown Bag Lunch for FacultyThe Richards College of Business held a brown bag lunch for faculty at noon on September 27, 2013. The event caught faculty up to speed on some of the research happening within the business world. The lunch was held in Adamson Hall 227.

Mark Wills, Bruce Bird and Mike Sinkey presented “Structuring a Bona-Fide Sale of Excess or Slow-Moving Inventory for Tax Purposes.” Their research addressed the discrepancy between tax laws and the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) accountants use to balance corporations’ books. While GAAP allows corporations to use the cost of their “excess” inventories for tax purposes, the tax laws disagree. The group found that many corporations, such as Volvo Cars of North America, were being forced to sell their excess inventory to a third party in order to receive any tax benefits for them. Richards College of Business presents Mike McConnell, Executive-in-ResidenceThe Richards College of Business welcomed Mike McConnell, vice president of Sales, Financial Products and the Corporate Planning Office for Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation, as this year’s Executive-in-Residence on October 3, 2013. For 17 years, the Richard’s College Executive-in-Residence program has been bringing top executives from a variety of fields onto UWG’s campus to personally interact with students for an entire day.

Mike, an alumnus and member of the 1982 UWG National Championship football team, graduated from UWG, which was then West Georgia College, in 1985 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing. Read more ...

UWG’s Center for Business and Economic Research Releases West Georgia Regional UpdateThe University of West Georgia’s Center for Business and Economic Research recently released the Summer 2013 West Georgia Regional Update, a research study that provides economic findings from Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson, Paulding and Polk counties. For the West Georgia region, unemployment rates in June 2013 were lower in five of the region’s six counties compared to June 2012. Only Carroll County saw an increase over the past year, up to 10.5 percent in June 2013 compared to 10.3 percent in June 2012. Four of the six counties had an unemployment rate at or below the state rate of 9.3 percent in June 2013. Read more ...

Southwire Makes Largest Donation in Richards College of Business HistoryAs they prepare for careers in business, university students face a changing landscape where focus is shifting from current and recent earnings reports to long-term profitability. Looking farther into the future, companies seek leaders who understand sustained financial stability balanced with environmental and social responsibility.

To help train those future leaders, Southwire Company and the University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business unveiled the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors Program. Funded by a $1.1 million gift from Southwire, the program allows students to complete undergraduate business studies and earn MBA degrees in four years. Read more ...


UWG Mourns the Passing of Dr. David Hovey

Dr. David HoveyDr. David H. Hovey Jr., former dean of Richards College of Business, passed away on August 25, 2013, at the age of 71.

Dr. Hovey was a well- respected individual, impeccable teacher, and trustworthy friend. He was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on July 20, 1942. As a young adult, Dr. Hovey served in the U.S. Army, and in 1984 he decided to come to the University of West Georgia to pursue his dream of teaching.

From 1984-1999, he was a professor of management and business systems and also the dean of the Richards College of Business. In 1999, he retired his position as dean and became the director of the Center for New Business Ventures until 2002. Lastly, from 2002-2008, he was a full-time professor, completing his career. Dr. Hovey retired in summer 2013. Read more ...


Enactus Team Wins at Regional Competition

Enactus Team Wins at Regional CompetitionThe University of West Georgia’s Enactus team shined at Atlanta’s regional competition this spring. The undergraduate business students won the title of first runner-up, beating all but one other team. The national office for Enactus also recognized the UWG team in the prestigious “4.0 Club,” an honor awarded to teams with excellent advisors, students and community support. The Enactus team was also recently recognized by UWG for their “Outstanding Community Service” at the annual Activities Awards Ceremony.

During the career fair, several students received onsite interviews with companies such as Sam’s Club and AFLAC. Home Depot was so impressed by the competition presentation that they invited and chauffeured Brittany Thompson, president of the UWG Enactus team, to the home office for a tour and special dinner with executives. Jessica JackleyNationally recognized speaker and worldwide entrepreneur, Jessica Jackley, will be the guest speaker for the upcoming BB&T Lectures in Free Enterprise hosted by the University of West Georgia Richards College of Business. The presentation, part of UWG’s commitment to provide valuable speakers and events for both its students and the West Georgia community, includes two events keynoted by Jackley. The first is a lecture on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m., at the Townsend Center, Main Stage, followed by a breakfast on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 a.m. at the Burson Center. French Students Study Abroad at UWG over the Summer

French Students Study Abroad at UWG over the SummerThis summer, 12 French students from the France Business School studied abroad and took courses at the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia.

The students stayed on campus during May and June, and took classes at the Richards College of Business. During May the students took Employment Law and Business in the United States and visited many companies. The students had the opportunity to tour a variety of companies including Southwire, Tanner Medical Center, the Cable News Network, Walmart.com, KIA Plant, The Coca-Cola Company Headquarters and many more. Student Organization Provides Etiquette Training

Student Organization Provides Etiquette TrainingStudent members of the UWG chapter of Enactus, a student service organization housed in the Richards College of Business, were invited to attend an etiquette dinner earlier this spring. The students received thorough instruction on proper table etiquette and then were asked to demonstrate their skills in a formal business dinner that included local professionals.

Dr. Jacqueline Michael, former UWG director of human resources, instructed the students on proper table manners in a business setting. She covered topics such as using correct utensils, appropriate dinner conversation and attire, proper arrival time and even the matter of how to eat certain foods. Read more ...
