David H. Hovey Faculty Fellowship Established

David H. Hovey Faculty Fellowship EstablishedThe University of West Georgia is pleased to announce the Hardy and Merryl McCalman Foundation recently made a donation to the University of West Georgia Foundation for the David H. Hovey Faculty Fellowship at the Richards College of Business. The endowment honors Dr. David H. Hovey, Jr., former dean of Richards College of Business at UWG, who passed away on August 25, 2013, at the age of 71.

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the fellowship on April 16, 2014. Beginning in fall 2015, the David H. Hovey Faculty Fellow will be appointed annually, and preference will be given to those working in the discipline of strategic management. Read more ...


UWG Holds Miller Hall Dedication Ceremony

UWG Holds Miller Hall Dedication CeremonyOn Wednesday, August 27, 2014 the University of West Georgia was proud to celebrate the dedication and naming of the business building in honor of Dr. J. Mark Miller, the first dean of the then-West Georgia College School of Business. The dedication was approved midsummer by the Board of Regents Committee on Real Estate and Facilities.

Born and raised in south Georgia, he spent seven years in the military before graduating from Florida State University with a B.S. degree in business administration and a M.S. degree in management. In 1964, he graduated from Louisiana State University with a Ph.D. in business administration and that year came to West Georgia College to develop and lead a B.S. degree program in business and economics after planning the first curriculum by mail from LSU. UWG Team Gains Recognition at the NSSA

UWG Team Gains Recognition at the NSSAThe Starbucks team of Riley Auskelis, Adam Kotter, LeeAnn Frank and Bailey Fabricius won national recognition at the National Social Sciences Association conference as the second best undergraduate research paper in the U.S. at what was announced as the largest gathering of the NSSA in its history.

The research regarded the University of West Georgia’s campus Starbucks and was conducted in President Emeritus Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna’s class in the Richards College of Business. The students made a survey and dispersed it through a marketing carnival in which participants answered the survey questions through a game and traditional questionnaire. Read more ...


UWG Chapter of the AMA Awarded

UWG Chapter of the AMA AwardedThe University of West Georgia chapter of the American Marketing Association in the Richards College of Business recently won an award for outstanding chapter plan at the AMA International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans. The Marketing Club is open to marketing majors as well as any students who are interested in the field of marketing.

At the conference, the executive board and students learned more about the field of marketing along with gaining first-hand experience in networking with people from around the U.S. There are over 300 active collegiate chapters in the U.S., and preparing, implementing and measuring against the plan is all a part of being a chapter in AMA. Boldt Honored as Economics Chair

Boldt Honored as Economics ChairThe Richards College of Business faculty and staff gathered to honor Dr. David Boldt, professor of economics, on Friday, June 20, as he stepped down from his role as the chair of the economics department, effective July 1, 2014, to return to teaching.

When Dr. Boldt was appointed as the economics department chair in the fall of 2001, he brought considerable experience as an educator to his role. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from San Diego State University in 1976, followed by a Master of Arts in economics from the University of New Mexico in 1978 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of New Mexico in 1987. He joined the UWG (then West Georgia College) faculty in 1988. Read more ...


The Georgia Society of CPAs Awards Students with UWG Scholarships

The Georgia Society of CPAs Awards Students with UWG ScholarshipsThe West Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accounts and the GSCPA Educational Foundation awarded three students with 2014 West Georgia Chapter Scholarships. The Scholarship Committee met and narrowed down the seven applicants and decided, based on qualifications and criteria, the three best recipients of this award: Julie Meigs, pursuing a master’s degree at UWG, Lauren Spaggiari, pursuing a master’s degree at UWG and Charles David Hensley, pursuing a bachelor’s degree at LaGrange College. Each student received an award amount of $1,200 to go toward their education in a field related to the Educational Foundation.

USG Board of Regents Approves Naming of J. Mark Miller HallThe University of West Georgia’s business building has recently received approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents Committee on Real Estate and Facilities to be named, J. Mark Miller Hall, in honor of Dr. J. Mark Miller, the first dean of then-West Georgia College’s School of Business. Dr. Miller represents a myriad of “firsts” and has consistently made numerous contributions to UWG and the Richards College of Business throughout his career.

"Dr. Miller, hired by then-West Georgia College in 1964, was the first chair of the Department of Business Administration, the first head of the Division of Business and Economic Studies and the first dean of the School of Business,” says Dr. Kyle Marrero, president of UWG. “Changing the name of the business building to ‘J. Mark Miller Hall’ solidifies his legacy as the leader in business education at the University of West Georgia that he truly has been.” Read more ...


UWG Students Win First Place in National Rockonomix Video Contest

MBA Student Team Represents UWG in London ShowcaseEconomics students from the University of West Georgia Richards College of Business recently won first place in the Rockonomix National Contest for the spring 2014 semester. Viewers were asked to vote for their favorite video.

The winning video for the spring 2014 semester was a parody of the popular Sara Bareilles song “Brave,” created by Nick Hoang, Leo Rodriguez, Jessica Brown, Rebekka Arocho, Austin Crider, Derek Brunson, Mark Arnold and Justin Daniels. Student Samantha Bush performed the lyrics in the video. The video was filmed in Atlanta, and highlights many of the landmarks and locations that identify the city. Students won a prize of $200 from Worth Publishing Company, a higher education textbook publisher that has sponsored the national competition since it was established. Read more ...


BB&T Gives $100,000 Donation to Richards College of Business

BB&T Gives $100,000 Donation to Richards College of BusinessThe University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business received a $100,000 donation from BB&T as part of their $1 million pledge made in 2009. The donation is being used to establish the Center for Ethics and Free Enterprise and support the bi-annual BB&T Lectures in Free Enterprise Series.

“Part of BB&T’s mission is to make the world a better place to live by making the communities in which we work better places to be,” said Tammy Hughes, BB&T West Georgia Area executive. “We see our partnership with the Richards College of Business as a good investment in our future business leaders. The Richards College of Business is doing excellent work preparing those future leaders, and we’re proud to be its partner.” Read more ...


MBA Student Team Represents UWG in London Showcase

MBA Student Team Represents UWG in London ShowcaseUniversity of West Georgia students recently travelled to London to represent the Richards College of Business in the Hertfordshire MBA Showcase. The team of five UWG students, who partnered with the University of Hertfordshire in a semester long joint study, received the “Best Collaborative Project” award, with specific commendations on the practical application and viability for implementation of the project. Participation was conducted through the MBA elective management course titled “Production and Operations Management with Quantitative Applications.”

For the showcase, the students developed a project for IBM – Hurley regarding the future of air travel. The Hurley division of IBM is the largest software research and development site in Europe. Read more ...
