Mountainfilm is a nonprofit "dedicated to educating, inspiring, and motivating audiences about issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, environments worth preserving, adventures worth pursuing, and conversations worth sustaining," according to their website at www.mountainfilmatl.org. Southwire, UWG’s First Cohort Begins InternshipSouthwire Company, LLC, North America’s leading manufacturer of wire and cable used in the distribution and transmission of electricity, knows that offering a solid sustainability internship not only attracts bright talent but can keep them on as sustainability experts. That idea was brought to life through collaboration with the University of West Georgia’s Richards College of Business.

With a growing demand from businesses to hire sustainability savvy individuals and a growing interest in sustainability from job-seeking college graduates the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors Program (SSBHP) was developed. Read more ...


BB&T Continues Commitment to UWG

BB&T Continues Commitment to UWGIn 2009, the BB&T Corp. made a pledge of $1 million to the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia. This gift established the Center for Ethics and Free Enterprise and the BB&T Lectures in Free Enterprise Series. Recently, Senior Vice President for Corporate Banking Tammy Hughes and Vice President and New Business Development Officer Rob Appleman were on campus to deliver this year’s installment of $100,000.

The Center for Ethics and Free Enterprise generates faculty and student research and new business courses. In addition, the lecture series has focused on core values and ethical foundations of free enterprise and issues facing business management and policy makers. Read more ...

UWG student Touts Benefits of UWG, Southwire Honors ProgramWhile many students would love to get through college as quickly as possible with two degrees in hand and ready to land a fantastic job in business, few have that opportunity. However, this dream is becoming a reality for Kristin Fox, who decided to take advantage of a program at the University of West Georgia still in its infancy, but already reaping benefits for those enrolled – the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors Program (SSBH).

The SSBH Program, a joint venture of Southwire Company, LLC, and UWG’s Richards College of Business, allows students to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in only four years. And in less than a year, Kristin will have achieved exactly that – two degrees in the time it normally takes to earn just one. Read more ...

Student Competes Nationally to Fund Business VentureSometimes, it can take years to get a small business off the ground, but University of West Georgia student and local entrepreneur William Cross has put himself on the fast track to success. He’s already got his product on select shelves and is seeking funding to expand his business while he’s getting his degree in business management. And as if that wasn’t enough, his product also has the potential to change thousands of lives across the United States.

William is a diabetic, and his product is specifically targeted to help other diabetics with a common condition called Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, more commonly known simply as neuropathy or DPN. In diabetics, neuropathy – or nerve pain – is caused by the degeneration of nerves, which is in turn caused by the presence of excess sugar in the blood stream. Read more ...

McConnells Create $25,000 Endowment for UWG Athlete Business MajorsFor Angie and Mike McConnell, the University of West Georgia holds a special place in their hearts. It’s where the couple of 28 years met. It’s where they met long-lasting friends. It’s the university Mike represented at the 1982 football championship. It’s where they had a one-of-a-kind educational experience.

“Some of the best moments in our lives started when we were in Carrollton [at UWG] together,” Mike recalled.

Mike graduated in 1985 and Angie in 1984. The couple has lived all over the country and only recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee, with their two daughters, Carson and Andie. Read more ...
